They did not make the X5 diesel with the manual in the US. I have a manual X5 (2003). It drives quite well, I think you would chew some expensive parts up with any real off roading.

I have heard from most people that the w210 is the first really bad one. I havent ever driven one or looked that closely, but I have seen pictures of spring perch failures and massive rust that seem to suggest the quality is less than impressive.
