Who DOESN'T suck at installing windshields?

We've had the windshield replaced twice in the Cherokee at this point.

First time, moron didn't do any prep work whatsoever and it was always really loud. And leaked from time to time. Turns out you could see daylight through the damn thing in about 5 spots once the trim piece was removed. Rolled like this for about 8 months trying to work with the company to fix the situation, communication dropped off, turns out they closed up shop.

2nd time was a clusterberkeley in itself. Dude (Safelite) showed up with a broken piece of glass the first time. Of course, didn't realize it was broken until the old glass was broken free, so that was awesome. Super sketched out for 2 days while we drive it to work anyways until he could come back. When he came back with good glass, he showed swmbo all the berkeleyups of the first guy, said he'd be able to treat the rust that had formed due to bad installation and we'd have no further problems, so i could fix the headliner that had fallen due to water damage.

This was replaced in winter. Now that it's spring and we've had a couple hard deluges, the berkeleying thing is leaking again. Of course, Safelite only has a 30 day workmanship warranty, so they're obviously not going to do a damn thing about it.

What do i do? Who do i go to to have the job done AGAIN to make sure that it's done RIGHT so it doesn't keep leaking and rotting out my berkeleying truck?

This is REALLY frustrating. This is the only vehicle i've ever had to have a window replaced on, and so far i'm 0 for 2. I'd like to put a new windshield in the MX6, but now i'm berkeleying terrified it's never going to seal again and just rot out the car. I also can't fix the super annoying sagging headliner until these leaks are fixed to the point that i'm satisfied they won't come back.

Maybe your windshield needs a new car.

Continually call safelite until they fix their berkeley up

I've had good luck with my local Safelite installers. At the same time, my friend had his S2000 all cut up and scratched by Safelite.

Has anyone taken their car to the dealer for a windshield replacement?

Having spent many years at dealers, when you take it to them its usually safelite or whatever company gives the dealer the best rates to do the windsheild

Dealer is going to call someone in to do the windshield replacement and the cynic in me suspects who they call is determined by how much they charge.

I'd call the local resto shops - well, probably not the one Datsun1500 went to - and ask who they use. People tend to get upset if their car that was restored for much dinero is scratched up or leaks.

Safelite popped a new windshield in my Audi for about 225 dollars. Great job, well worth it.

take trim off, silicone the piss out of the thing, put trim back, forget about it?

or is the vehicle too nice for this, because it has worked in the past for me. my buddy had an aerostar that the windshield would pop out a couple inches when you shut the door.

But seriously swank, call safelite and raise holy hell and keep calling until they fix it. Leaks around the windshield seal dont just appear without defective installation

Just like anything, there are people good at their job and people who are bad at their job.

Raise a fuss with Safelite and also, take the car to the glass shop to do it instead of having them come out. That way they have a more controlled environment to work in with potentially better techs and it will be slightly cheaper. Have the manager/supervisor there to inspect the work and to watch the installer. Make sure to point out any mistakes you've seen so they can correct them in their dime.

If this was done through your insurance, call them and they can be a bigger thorn in a shops side than you can be. Safelite can be pretty hit or miss. I know superb installers that work for them and I know of complete knuckle dragging morons that don't give a E36 M3. Since they (here anyways) pay their techs per job the incentive to take 10 extra minutes to make things perfect isn't there for the latter.

If not, then calling high end body shops and restoration shops is your next best bet. Those guys don't like problems and the shops don't want their reputation tainted by sub par work.

I had safelite do mine in the E46 and it's fine. I asked that they use a genuine BMW gasket and they did - and they did it for my $100 deductible because there was a big crack right in the driver's line of sight. They came out to my driveway too so no complaints on my part.

I've got an independent guy who, like my PDR guy spends most of his time at Benz/BMW/Audi/Porsche/Ferrari dealerships.

It costs more than having Safelite's parolee come to the house, but it's a perfect job every time.

Anyone in the DC/MD/NOVA metro needs a quality windshield gig, holler and I'll refer him.

I'm pretty mad because I bought an oem Mopar gasket/trim thing instead of using the cheap bullE36 M3 they usually use.

Have two star cracks in the Evo windshield. I passed inspection but I would rather not keep looking at them. Probably get the windshield replaced sometime this year.
