Those are different V8s. The Stag V8 is like two TR7 engines mated together, with all the problems you'd expect from that, and then some. The TR8 used the Buick/Rover 215/3.5 liter... a good engine.
I've read a few write-ups about the Stag 3.0 in Thoroughbred & Classic Cars, and I have to say it sounds pretty poor. The later Rover 3.5's seem nicer in every single possible way.
Are you working on a Stag or just looking at one or something else?
I have 4 stags and want to rebuild one with the original engine., I am aware of the overheating issues but still want to do one original, they are getting very rare. I was not aware the TR8 had the 3.5 though, you do learn something every day
Steve,
I put in a call to a local Triumph Club guy, I will forward the info as soon as I get it.

From what I've read a lot of those engines came out of the factory with too much casting sand left in the water jackets to be healthy. Timing chains stretch fast, sometimes needing replacement within 20,000 miles before needing replacement. I think better chains are available now. The radiators don't offer much extra capacity for heat, you may want to look for a better aftermarket unit and a good fan setup of course.
There may be something to the head gaskets not sealing well when they were new, I'm not sure. Otherwise they're a fairly decent motor from what I remember reading! Again, I've never touched one, so take my rambling here with a grain of salt.
