There is a 929s that I might be able to pick up for well under crap-can racer price. I think its a 1991. I'm told that it has a overheating problem, the owner says it boils over after about 15 minutes on the highway. My best WAG is that it has a HG failure.

Wikipedia tells me that the 929s should have a DOHC 90* J series V6. I'm not a Mazda guy, and I've never worked on a Mazda V6, so tell me, is this something that I should run away from, or are they decent to deal with?

I'm not planning to keep it, it will be a fix & flip project.

They are getting rare these days. Not many people want them, odd car for the time. You might have trouble flipping it. Not bad cars though.

If it has a 5spd, tell me. It'll be the easiest flip you've ever done.

Good cars though.

Good cars. The v6 makes god power, some afterarket support. Reliable. Overheat on highway only is usualy a radiator tho.

Reliable, but I would personally steer clear. Many of the common-failure parts were never released for aftermarket production by Mazda. There is a small bank of solenoids on that engine for things like Evap purge and other vacuum things. They are plastic, and age and hydrocarbons turn them into powder. replacing them means a call to the dealer, and expect to shell out $80-180 depending on the solenoid.

Most of those solenoids can be found on other mazdas of the same time period. They "recycled" a ton of that stuff. I actually have a 929 solenoid or two on my mx6.

Yeah most of those solenoids are common across many Mazdas. The tech. didn't change for years and years. I've got some on my GC 626es ('83-'87) that are the same as on my FD.

Some day I want a boxy 929 (HC) with a 5-speed swap.

I got take a look at it yesterday. The leather interior is pretty bad. The body looks good from 20' but close up it looks like it has a bad respray.

But, the engine compartment is clean, the engine starts right up and sounds sweet. I mean like nissan VQ with nice exhaust sweet! Also, it doesn't have an overheat problem, there was some confusion because there was more than one car in the original conversion.

If its still there after I finish rebuilding my bathroom next month, I'm going to take it.
