Nephew wanting one, anything to look at, problem areas.
Opinion as a DD/autocrosser

Three pages of mostly discontent.
My favorite quote:

In this thread, I had asked the identical question 2 years ago:

Terrible for either of your requirements. Good for top speed runs and gross displays of horsepower when they're running.

This. Auto-xing a 3kgt is probably one of the less good ideas I've heard for that car.

I'd rather autox a MKiii Supra or a Z32 TT... and neither of those ideas exactly warms my cockles, either.
I didn't even realize until sometime last year that the lower-spec 3kGTs and clones were FWD... puts them even lower on my want list, and they were already near the bottom. For some reason I've never seen the appeal.

Hey I thought the MKIII Supra I was in autocrossed rather well.

I know they do pretty well for a big heavy car, but i can think of at least 40 other cars i'd rather autocross.
The NA FWD cars are dogs, the turbo AWD ones are ridiculously complicated. I really loved my 92 RT/TT, but I'd be afraid to own another one now that they're 20 years old, and have been cheap enough for hacks to own them for too long.

Let's add a thrid for good measure.

They remind me so much of the R35 GTR for some reason. Big, Heavy, Complicated, unfortunately also not nearly as powerful, and the complicated stuff works AGAINST, not FOR the vehicle.
Wasn't there a GRM rule a while back that stated if a car exists, someone here will speak up for it? I'm not seeing that with the 3000gt of all things. Do we really favor Yugos over twin turbo Mitsubishis?
Do we really favor Yugos over twin turbo Mitsubishis? Sure. Why not? For example, which is more likely to be drivable at 9 tenths on the way to pick up milk and bread? (Actually, from the sounds of it, I could probably have stopped that sentence after "drivable.")
Well don't get me wrong, i WOULD own a 3000GT VR4.
I just wouldn't recommend that anyone else own one.

Well sure you could OWN one, driving it however would be a different story since it will always be broken.
Hand me the Yugo keys.

For sure, but getting to it is another story! Problem area? This picture.

I lead a charmed life when it comes to things like this. I'd take my chances.
I also wouldn't stop until i had 1000awhp on tap.
Yeah... it mildly satiates my urge to strap one of those into a Dodge Caravan.... 6g72 SOHC's were available.... and I'm told the head swap to the TT heads isn't THAT bad (at least by GRM standards.... then again I'm party to an NA Miata that's getting a street ported 13b as we speak.... and I don't see the problem there, either).
My 3kgt was awesomely fast without really seeming fast. I've posted before about what it cost me to keep it running, so I won't get into that again. I will say that I will swap the whole shebang into something else someday, like a second gen camaro or a tvr. I think I could get most of that engine compartment cleaned up running standalone and rerouting all the hoses. Someday.

I'd be easier to swap the whole shebang instead of just the heads.
