As long as they fix the potholes, whatever. I’m not about to sell my diesel truck because of it, but i will pull my front plate and holder when it goes live.

Those are allowed for pleasure driving but not for a daily driver car (you do need to have at least one car registered with regular plates, in order to get collector plates on an old car.) Personally, I consider these rules adequate and it's rare that I will drive one of my classic cars more than once a week unless it's during a club activity.
The Ohio Historical Plate rules are:
OPERATIONAL RESTRICTIONS: A historical motor vehicle shall not be used for general transportation, but may be operated on the public roads and highways to and from a location where maintenance is performed on the vehicle.
I have 2 cars (now 3) with Ohio Historical plates. These are very much "sunny day" cars and rarely come out any more than that. Sure, I might be going to an Autox which I consider to be a car show. For everything else, I plan, if needed, to tell them that I am the mechanic myself and I have the car on the road to diagnose or to test my recent repair.
What I have never found out for Ohio is what the penalty is? First off, if pulled over for speeding the officer usually just wants to know that the car is in-fact registered (which it is) and insured. When they run the plates they will rightfully come back to me as the rightful owner. That seems like it would satisfy most of the police officers concerns.

I dont run a front plate on anything already, hope they follow through on fixing the roads. The road I work on will eat suspention out of your car.

This has nothing to do with plate scanners as they can read the rear plate as they pass you. This has everything to do with the Ohio State highway patrol's proclivity to use laser for speed enforcement, as well as the state's ability to charge extra for me to own two plates.
It's all about money.....
California is a 2 plate state , gives the cops a good reason to pull you over......
But Arizona is one plate , so they often get pulled over when visiting .....
Mexico is 2 plate and at one time has decals in the side windows with plate number too !

The Highway Patrol are actually the most powerful lobbying body in the state -- and they want the front plate.

I only got bothered about lacking a front plate once. And there was no ticket. And he didn't even bother to cite me for speeding (I very much was, at the time).
Every police officer I've spoken to about front plates has told me that don't cite for them, since they don't like them either. OTOH they have also all been car enthusiasts so there may be a bias as well.

Around here, it’s a pretense for fishing expeditions. UC police shot a guy a few years ago after pulling him over for no front plate. That was a clusterberkeley. I have in the past run no front plate, and still don’t on a couple of cars, never been pulled over for it, but then I don’t “fit the profile”.

The last 3or4 cars I have had, the plate mounted to the bumper. No aerodynamic loss there.

No front plate is now official in Ohio. A buddy of mine had to transfer a bunch of plates over since his father passed away. He gets the new plates, goes to put them on and there is only one plate in each bag! So first he thinks they are stuck together and starts prying at them. No go. Calls the BMV and they say "One plate is all you get now." I started looking around at the supermarket today... plenty of cars with only one plate, none from out of state or with temp tags. Started paying attention on the street -- same thing. Some people have already bought novelty front plates. The BMVs were closed when the May 2020 changeover was supposed to happen and I'm sure it wasn't the first thing on people's minds right now.

I think people who live in the river towns were subject to less scrutiny since a car could easily be from Kentucky or WV and it wasn't worth the cops' attention to flash back and see which state the car was from. Nonetheless, I hear this incident weighed on the decision in Ohio. In Central Ohio (except for maybe OSU campus) there was much more attention paid to missing front plates.
I always think its funny everyone is so up in arms about it. We have them here in Va. Yeah, sure, i'd prefer not to have a front plate. But i also just don't care. In fact, most of my plates are vanity (personalized) anyhow, so might as well get my money's worth for the extra $$ i pay for that and have it on both plates lol.
All of my cars came with front plate mounts, so not like I had to drill holes in the bumper or anything. Without a front plate, I'd just have two lonely holes there :)
Pet peeve: people who put them off-center as if they're blocking some giant FMIC or something on their Civic.....

There's no "going to the BMV"...just rip off the front plate. Though I kinda think part of the reason the change didn't get pulled back at the last minute was bacause everyone was too caught up in covid stuff. And it went into effect july 1st, not may.
As for my personal opinion, I'm not obsessed with it, and I've had one on every car except my cayman (purchased after the law was passed but before it went into effect and didn't have holes in the bumper so I wasn't going to add them for 6 months)...but I did rip the front plate off of my fiesta on the first day it was legal to.

And THAT pisses me off. I've been seeing cars for a while now with rear plates only (seems anything starting with an H is single plate). So people have cars with bare brackets on the front bumpers.
So basically, if you want to not look like a dirtbag, you have to buy a new bumper cover.
I'd be fine if there were an option to pay extra to get a second plate. $50 or whatever would be a lot cheaper than the few hundred bucks it would be for a new bumper. (Getting a used one would be tricky, they'd all have mounting holes in them)
I also wonder if this is why it now takes longer to go through EZPass lanes. They photogragh your license plate to verify that the transponder is being used with a vehicle it was registered to. You used to be able to fly through (at no more than 10mph!) but now you have to come to a complete stop before the gate will open.
I just renewed my plates a couple weeks ago. There is an option to pay a bit extra and get 2 plates.
Edit: Just double checked online. It doesn't mention an extra charge, it just asks how many plates you want to display. One or two (optional).

Maybe they'll move the cameras to take a picture of the rear plate instead.
I'm probably going to get novelty front plates for the cars with obvious holes but take off the ones that come off clean.
My truck now has a pair of holes since we're no front plate anymore. More air to the innercooler. Never drilled the charger when we got it, would rather get a ticket than drill a new car for a front plate.
When I lived or worked in states with no front plate I noticed many stores sold novelty front plates. That hasn't happened here yet. I think of the ubiquitous mirrored plastic University of Kentucky plate that everyone knows if they've ever lived near there. Big selection at any Kentucky Korner in the mall.
