I was reading the thread on the XJS challenge build and how awesome they are, so what is not awesome about them? With how cheap they are it seems like it would be fun to have one to drive sometimes.

Two issues come to mind - fuel consumption and reliability. And parts prices. OK, make that three then.

Ever since the first small block came out people have been swapping them into everything, so idk about that. I guess fuel consumption would be a problem, what do they get like 12 mpg?

On the plus side, it's probably the least expensive V12 out there. On the down side, I think there's also a lot of V11 Jags out there, too.

They actually go for crazy money in Europe compared to here, doesn't mean they are good though. Considering I used to dd a Milano ( for about 3 years and 40k miles) and I want a quattroporte and a Citroën sm could they be much worse than that?

The challenge car only has to make 5 laps and 1 pass to be successful .With all the things I ran into with the car I would not DD.However if you just want one to play with buy one for a K or less and play with it.Maybe you will find one with a 4 speed manual(yes they made them).Take one set of cats and mufflers off and it wakes the V12 up and sounds great.I'm thinking about megasquirting mine just for kicks.

(Disclaimer: I've been reading some of the stuff he's posting on some of the Jags on here, and he really seems to know his E36 M3. He's making me want one.)

Yeah, reading all that is kinda what made me post this. I kinda want to buy some previously expensive beater car for fun next year, i was thinking a biturbo, but an XJS would be cool too. I know where there is a dead one not too far away, idk if its for sale though. I have a real car to use everyday, so it wouldnt matter if it was broken often. lol

My XJS is not that bad to work on.I replaced the front brakes (rotors,calp.pads and lines) for less than 500 bucks both sides.Theres a forum just for XJS's and they will tell you about most any real problems they have. the electrical is the biggest problem but truthfully its all about old age and replacing stuff.There heavy is my biggest beef.They dont turn very well ether,but thats all fixable.I'm in a MAD hunt for a 4 speed manual.only two so far for sale ebay 1 and 1in Columbia South Carolina CL.I WILL HAVE ONE!

If you really want one and can turn a wrench, get on craigslist. The last 3 times I searched for them I found multiple running examples for less than $1,500.

How hard are the rear rotors to change? On my milano the inboard brakes were actually easier to work on than most normal rear discs I have worked on, idk if the jaguar ones are a lot worse though.

I want one, but I don't want a big damn hassle, as I've already got one in what has to be the worst best Dodge Ram on the planet.

In my humble opinion you're slightly to the left of nuts Citroens scare the bejeezus out of me.. The fact that you feel confident enough to tackle one is impressive.. And a Quattroporte? GULP!!!! I want my MOMMY!!!!! Jaguar uses American sized wrenches not those complex metric. 1/2& 9/16ths are the two most common sizes.. It's a Chevy Bolt pattern on the wheels.. a big chunk of the stuff in it is made in good ol' USofA and for mechanics who would need to take a shoe off to count to twelve they don't get above 6 ..It's 1,2,3,4,5,6 A&B 300,000-400,000 miles is doable and then you can rebuild the whole engine without removing it from the car right back to stone stock original (as in no overbore )

Just a stupid thought, but would it be feasable to use a Painless Wiring universal harness instead of the original Jaguar one? Just to get past the electrical gremlins?

Everyone STOP! JUST STOP! Stop making me want a Jag right now! My 5 year old son already told me that Jags are cooler my SAAB that makes turbo noises and crackles & spits fire, I don't think I can take anymore. La la la not listening.

The bad things about an SM are they need a lot of engine work to be reliable (new valves, convert to double row lower timing chain and updated tensioner, and some problem with the oil pump drive needs fixing), and I dont think you can get windshield glass easily, which means no freeway driving where I live. Someday I will get one though. Are jaguar windshields expensive (more than $400)?
