Why do Fords have an extra switch?

My Civic has a cruise control on/off switch.

I like the cruise in my Econoline van. When I go on long trips in the Miata I wish it had cruise control sometimes.

I tend to use my CC for long highway trips AND for trips to work in the morning. As I am usually leaving my house at 5am.. I set the cruise and then I do not have to worry about being a cop magnet

My Fiesta has a simple switch on the steering wheel. Button for on and off. One to set and or increase, another to lower. There is a hold button that works the same as the brake switch. disengages and then reengages at previous set speed. Holds speed very well. It has been said that an on/off button is for safety reasons.

ford way is better you can resume with out shutting off the cruze or hitting the brake to kick it off it keeps your speed.

Please explain, what I don't like about my Ford is that I can set the cruise speed but I have to hit the brake or turn cruise off to pause the speed control. If I want to resume I have to set the speed again. My Subaru has a switch that allows you to keep cruise turned on, but temporarily pause the speed setting until you hit resume.

my f150 had the on/off, resume/coast, and set/accel buttons. what annoyed me about it was that if you were on cruise, and pushed the gas to get out of someones way or get around another car, then tapped the "accel/set" button to bump the set speed up a mile or two so you weren't getting run over, it would think you were trying to set your speed again, and hold at whatever speed you were going. so if you had it set on 65 and had sped up to 70, but just wanted to increase your cruise to 67, you would have to either go down to 67 and hit "set/accel" or let it settle back to 65 and then hit "set/accel" twice.

i like the cancel button on all my japanese imports, if i'm catching a truck too quickly and need to slow down so there is space to get around, i can cancel, resume, cancel, resume until i have space to move over and get by. much easier than changing the set speed or ya know, using my foot...
