I've wondered about this also. I even thought about getting a MazdaSpeed6 and mounting the 2.3L T engine transversely attached to a NC Miata transmission with a custom driveshaft and associated mounts. Seems like it would be a great car. Even better if you could add the components to the wagon version of the Mazda6 but not sure that tub had the transmission tunnel and space for the rear subframe and diff.

The ATS comparison if definitely eye opening, I'll be in the market next year at this time (I know, I'm way ahead of the game here) and will absolutely take a look at one.

Didn't Toyota or Subaru have a concept car 4 door BRZ that they were toying with producing? A little lower power than you are looking for, but RWD and I assume a manual would be available. Not within your time frame though.
