It has good road manners along with being capable of trudging through the wilderness if need be (with good A/Ts) It totally suits my needs: 4WD for the Winter and occasional mud, enough power to get through most situations, easy to work on, enough space in back to pack my camping gear, and takes a beating and asks for more. For as many 80s and 90s E36 M3 Chrysler products that were out there, the XJ Cherokee was the one thing they did right. I would get another one, but it would be one of the last couple year models.
Heh, Chrysler didn't do the XJ, which is why it's right.

Again, what kind of truck? If you are talking a diesel, then your apples to oranges discussion is even more absurd. Since you are talking 400K MORE than what you have on it now says you are talking a diesel.

I think i gave up some bottom end torque with 180k miles, 2 less cylinders, and less displacement.
I'm genuinely curious about this race, btw... we are doing this, right?

Yep. Looking for 450-500k miles out of this before I pitch it. We're sitting at 68k miles right now. HEaded to Northeast Ohio tomorrow to pick up the wife's new "puppy" (6mos old, 70lbs). About 700 miles round trip.
OH, it's the baby motor?? That ain't a truck!
One thing that has only been mentioned once I think, the 4WD. It's a killer system, reliable and effective. The north 1/2 of the country does well with a vehicle that can drive all the wheels and a van or 2WD truck can be a liability at times.
But, we all have our opinions don't we?
DrBoost wrote: OH, it's the baby motor?? That ain't a truck!
That's why i'm lol'ing at him saying the XJ has "mediocre power."
Which is why we're going to the drag strip.
^ again, it's an opinion. I've beenthrough our worst winters without 4wd, usually in rwd trucks that are peg legged to boot. Was the 4WD Grand Vitara nice in the winter? Absolutely, the thing was literally unstoppable. But was it needed? No.
and 300hp is not a "baby". It towed a 1700lb open trailer and 3100lb C4 just fine through northern Arkansas and southern Missouri.

I wouldn't be surprised if you hit it, but it's a little early to be counting on that kind of mileage in my opinion. But that's just my opinion, and they're usually like my butthole.
I'd feel confident about mine making it to 400k miles. Of course, it's just about halfway there already.
It's an OPINION that a good 4WD system is good no have in the snowy north? Really?
I guess it's also an opinion that a top-fuel dragster is better at going fast in a strait line for a quarter-mile at a time too then?
I'm out...

what's nice, even if something bad happens parts are cheap, and I know how to fix it, PLUS it's really simple to work on. As long as the body/frame hold up it'll last forever.

It is. It is nice, but it is not NEEDED. I've never said it wasn't nice. Just not needed. And considering the extra drag the additional axle, driveshaft and transfercase create on fuel economy, it's not worth it to me.

True... you've definitely got that on me.
Parts are expensive for an XJ. I don't know how to fix an XJ, and they're horribly hard to work on.
Tom_Spangler wrote: I don't have a use for an XJ since my DD is a full-size truck, but I can see the appeal of a cheap go-anywhere vehicle that can do some towing and hauling. But I must ask, are they that much simpler or more reliable than say, a first-gen Explorer, similar vintage Blazer, 4Runner, etc? Seems to me that when you are looking that cheap, it's best to select a type of vehicle, then pick the one that's in the best condition that you can find. And there's a lot of vehicles in that type (small-midsize truck-based SUV that can tow). Exploders in particular were one of the best-selling vehicles of the 90s, so they have to be even easier to find than the Jeeps.
For me the difference is solid front axle. I prefer to have solid front axles in my 4x4s and don't mind giving up a little ride for it. I'm not saying I'm completely opposed to IFS, but I do prefer solids.

Best argument for the XJ so far.
XJ is highly functional, easy to fix, cheap to fix, easy to find parts for because so many were made and most parts from all the years fit any of the other years (with a few exceptions). The cargo bay is large and can fit most anything you want, especially if you keep the spare out back. In stock form they're decent on the road, handle ok, are surprisingly quick leaving a stoplight, and have off-road capability superior to pretty much any of the unibody SUVs out these days, and comparable to the real "truck" SUVs like the 4Runner. I liked mine, but once we got the 4Runner (which does everything just as well or better) for the wife, the XJ became expendable and I like going fast, so I don't need 2 SUVs.
plus they just look tough.
also, they ARE tough. This is the damage to mine from hitting a 6-point buck dead-on at 60mph. Slightly bent bumper and tweaked a fender a bit. That's IT. Doesn't look damaged at all, does it? The deer was DOA.
