That's a cool lookin' car! It looks to be in remarkably good shape, too.
I did see this on my local craigslist (NMNA, etc):

Could be interesting :) Just run full standalone!

Argh, I didn't realize I typed RX7. Yes, RX8 rotating assembly would definitely need a RX8 rear counterweight. You do bring up a good point though regarding bolting the counterweight to an older 215 mm flywheel. I honestly have no idea if the bolt pattern is the same.

Using any kind of RX7 transmission would make life easier. I'm pretty sure those transmission were developed in-house by Mazda whereas the 6-speed in the RX8 is from Aisen. It's a completely different animal. I know people who've swapped them into RX7s but it doesn't seem like it's worth the work. It's not like you gain a second overdrive gear anyway since 5th is 1:1 in those. Looking at Mazdatrix they claim the RX3 should have an early version of the ribbed case. The general consensus is those are quite strong, which is another case for keeping it instead of the Turbo II or RX8 transmission.
I've always had a soft spot for the RX3s. I keep saying the only thing that'll ever replace my 79 RX7 with 27k original miles would be an RX3.

That is an awesome motor! I'm still kicking myself for not scalloping/side clearancing the rotors in my FC!
