Looking at a 2000 but it recently began making top end noise, according to the owner, and down on power. No CEL. Thoughts??

Me too. Hell, vs bottom end even. He says it happened pretty quickly. Obviously not mechanically inclined. Just not sure if it was something Obvious. Without the noise, I'd be thinking timing, maybe
The engine uses shim over bucket, so maybe it spit out a shim? If that were to happen I'd be concerned about collateral damage to the camshaft and valve.
Pulling off the valve cover to take a look should be a relatively quick job.
