My wife has a Mazda 3 neither of us particularly likes. She bought it out of panic when Saab went under . Her (dealer) mechanic scared her with stories of parts problems on her 2009 9-3.....
She has been threatening to get an SUV instead to carry the stuff (we don't have ) because the ads told her she needed to have that space.
Today she opened the door to a sedan with a trunk because she likes the newer bmw 3 series cars. While the iron is hot, what else for 4 doors, nice interior with leather, auto, navigation (without diskette uploads) Bluetooth, a trunk that can fit a folded up dog crate (3, x 3'6"x 8") and lots of reliability. Cause I am overloaded with maintenance tasks.....
FYI she is not an enthusiast and drives the speed limit religiously. I will drive the car and I don't, but i will only be driving on occasion.
Go....

Seems like pretty much any current mid-size sedan would fit those criteria. Fusion, Camry, Impala, Accord, Infiniti (insert alphanumeric name here)or their luxo twins, etc.
Acura makes some nice sedans with mafia trunks. Or... just get the Accord.
That sounds like the description of an Accord EX-L V6 to me. Loaded, reliable as the sunrise, fast (I know you said she drives slow, but you can hoon it), handle well, etc...
used TSX wagon; missed the sedan requirement, rent a sedan for a week for her to use, she'll want a wagon or hatch again.

TSX has an astonishingly large trunk with a split fold down rear seat to boot (get it? "To boot"). 42" is pretty wide / long, though.
charger?
my wife loves hers 4 weeks later. she keeps loving it more from what it seems.
My mom was in the market for a sedan. She drove the 3-series, C Class, Jaguar XE and the Audi A3 (the A4 was just too big from the get go).
She prefers the A3 over all of those because it "feels tight" and is "the right size." She thought the BMW was boring. She wouldn't even consider a Lexus because that's what "old people drive."
She's 70, drives a couple of miles a day to Wegmans and the Gym. Her 2009 BMW 328i has 39,000 miles on it.
So, take that endorsement for what you will.
She hates camries and accords. I probably should have put that in the opening. They may be the perfect answer but they won't happen. She was looking at 4 door BMWs but even for off lease models they are at the extreme end of the price range.
I don't disagree that a wagon is likely the best option, but if it isn't a sedan its going to be a SUV. The reason a sedan has a chance is that it affords better protection from late night shoppers (PC for threiving dirt bags that break windows for stuff they see, or think may be, in the hatch area.) I know my trunk has saved me from thrives many times when adjoining cars have their back windows removed.
You can get a really well equipped Optima/Sonata that will fit all the needs she has and not hit the wallet too hard. Long warranty, good build quality. Hard to miss on those.
What about a Lexus? The IS would have a pretty small trunk but the GS seems like a pretty nice place to spend some time.
I would have said Accord Sport as it looks pretty nice, but see those are out, perhaps something in the Acura family?
Oddball choice of maybe the GLI? Probably a good sized trunk but still pretty fun to drive with the DSG (just get it CPO with the extended warranty)
We looked at the TSX suggested earlier. She doesn't want one because they are a bloated version of the earlier version sh. But then she saw the ILX and was interested. Anyone know anything about these?
The Taurus is better than it should be.

Upmarket Civic. Check the trunk to verify that dog crate will fit.
