Ford Eco-boost engine for next years Fiesta. I am picturing it in an MG Midget with a Miata 5 speed transmission kissing its ass.
Ford and Mazda seem to share a lot of DNA, so I was wondering if the Miata transmission might bolt on to the back of this little beast?
If it shares a bolt pattern with the 4-cylinder Duratec, you may be in luck.
Is it sitting in your lunchbox? Going to sneak one home Psychobilly Cadillac style?

I drove that little guy in a manual Focus. It was surprisingly not terrible!
What's the specs on that little thing?
And I sure hope it comes in a manual transmission.

So I have to wonder what it would be like in an MG Midget with a 5 speed gearbox?
Probably have to soften the front springs to deal with the lack of weight!
I hope the transmission is suitably small and light like that and they aren't bolting it up to a bigger one just to have fewer transmission options.

The 1.0L engine is projected to produce 123 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque under the hood of the Fiesta – gains of three horses and 36 lb-ft versus the current car's 1.6-liter naturally aspirated four.

OK, ignoring for the moment the bellhousing (can be cast or fabbed from plate) and the input shaft (can be cut/welded/trimmed/etc.), what transmission would we like to see?
What criteria; Toughness, ratio's, availability, price?
I like the Toyota T50, but rare nowdays.
Ford T-9? In USA, only found in Merkur.
One of the Mazda boxes?

RX-8 / Miata box for sure.
something small and lightweight... and close ratio... Honda S2000 trans?
I would almost suggest Fiat 124 trans.. but they are getting thin on the ground and I am not sure it could survive that kind of torque
S2000 transmission isn't all that small although it does do a good job. Need something about half that size
Ford has been running the 1.0 in a race series in Europe or the UK. Don't know what transmission is used.
Correct me if im wrong but the RX8/S2K/Miata trans are one in the same +/- a few small adjustments right?

No, but they are all made by the same company
In reply to mad_machine:
'04 - '08 RX8 and the S2000 shared the same transmission architecture, just different ratios I believe. '09 and up RX8 had a Mazda built transmission.

Ehhh... kindof. Technically they're both Aisin AZ6s, just like the trans in the NB Miata. However, once you look past the nomenclature, you realize they aren't near as similar as the name would have you believe.
Suzuki Samurai has about the smallest 5-speed here in the US, and already bolts to a metro 1.0L...

The samurai transmission bolted to a swift 1300 cc engine is a sweet deal in a MG Midget. Only issue is that both engine and tranny are getting scarce.
Had a fiat 124 powered MG midget back in the 80's and it was a fun ride and a great transmission.
With the Ecotec in a MG Midget and a short commute to work, (3 miles) I can see putting gas in at the start of the season and being done!
if it doesn't, a T5 (or anything else with a bellhousing that isn't partially integrated into the transmission housing like the Miata/RX7 unit) and get some plate aluminum and fabricate your own bellhousing (I'd use SFI/FIA specs as a guideline) to adapt the trans to the engine? then, if there's a flywheel that will bolt to the engine and take a racing style clutch (fairly standardized mounting AFAIK), find one that will work with the transmission splines and bolt it to the flywheel, and boom, tiny little 3 cylinder mated to the trans of your choice, ready to drop into the car of your choice?
The RX7 turbo trans has a removable bell housing IIRC.

While I appreciate that this can be done it goes beyond the skillset of 99% of the people who might want to do anything with this engine.
While some people let nothing stand in their way when doing a swap, I like to find "Naturals" that seem to want to go together.
