So, i was given a set of neat old mag wheels. I think they will look amazing on my neon.
They're unilug. Slotted holes, requiring a cragar shank style lug.
They are the wrong setup. Neon is 5x100. I THINK the smallest pattern on the mags is 5x4.5
Can i have the slots machined deeper to fit? Backspace is dead on, so adapters are out.
Picture of the wheels
I would never consider putting uni-lug wheels on my stuff.
That is worse than the old flat center white spoke wheels.
Not hub-centric, and washers under the nuts that are 25% unsupported.
Nyet!
Is there enough meat left to machine a half inch of material out? I can say from experience they will shake at speed without hub rings.
So, horrible things will happen, even if i successfully machine them. Or i will ruin the wheels in the attempt.
Got it.
it looks like you're already at the limit of how much smaller it could go... you can't slot into those chamfers, 'cause that's how the bolts seat... and the chamfers are already cutting into the centerbore
or am I seeing that picture wrong?
Mike there is a plug, if you will, that fills that oblong hole, But I don't know of one that is for a 100 mm.
I dug a wheel out of storage and really looked at it.
No way in hell they can be machined properly or retain structural integrity afterwards. The wheels dont even come close to fitting the neon hubs without adding material in that would be the wall thickness of the lug nut shank.
In short, free wheels wont work no matter what.
DAMN.
When you say deeper, do you mean towards the center hole or deeper into the face of the wheel? I agree that it looks like the slots are already cutting into the center hole, so trying to go that way won't work.
Deeper towards the hub bore. Not nearly enough material there.
If you really want to use them you will need a redrill of the hubs/rotors or spacers. 3/4" spacer seems to be about the thinnest you can get and stretch the tires?
I’d say that it’s a good excuse to buy a car that fits the wheels.
I had no idea that unilug wheels were a thing. Who thought that was a good engineering decision?
Does Neon stuff brand engineer swap with the caravans that had 5x4.5?

Well, since I'm older than you, I've seen and used these things. I had no issues with them. They stayed in balance, ran fine. Mine were a set of Cragar SS from around 1976. It was a common thing on American made wheels, Ford and Chevy PCDs on one wheel.
In reply to mazdeuce - Seth :
Crager in the 60s but they sucked then also.
Not real Mags, but if they were, this would be even more ill-advised.
Read fragile, flammable.

Get the berkeley out of here, engineer! We are busy counting beans!

Ran them successfully on my LRT and my old turbo D150, key was to ACTUALLY retorque the nuts after ten miles. No issues.
There are supposed to be inserts that go in those slots, and then the studs stick through the inserts. As long as they aren't buggered up they work fine. These are for Keystone wheels, I just posted them as an example - each brand had its own specific type.
if you can’t use them i will offer to take them off your hands.
I had a set of 4 bolt uni-lug Westerns, purchased new, on one of my mother's 510 Datsuns. They sucked. Had to balance them on the car, and re-balance if you removed them for any reason. They make great hose racks, as Woody said.
I used to have a very similar set on my 70 Kingswood Estate. With the proper lugs balancing was never an issue.
