From the fertile minds over at the 24 Hours of LeMons:

THE OFFICIAL 24 HOURS OF LeMONS WIN-A-WARTBURG CONTEST!

In the spirit of the PGA (win a free Buick) and Caesars Palace (win a free Bentley), the 24 Hours of LeMons proudly announces its own automobile giveaway: Win-a--Free-'58-Wartburg.

The rules are simple: Just tell us why you should be the winner of a 1958 Wartburg 311 sedan. Post your essays here or email them to npon@driversdoor.com; all entries must be received by September 1, 2009. The winner will receive a beat-ass 1958 Wartburg 311 sedan plus a one-year supply of Bactine, both presented at the Lamest Day race at Nelson Ledges, October 3-4, 2009.

What's a Wartburg? Think "East Germany's Buick to Trabant's Chevrolet." And why should you enter to win it? A) If you have to ask, you shouldn't. B) After suitable prep, this car will be automatically accepted in, given free entry to, and awarded ZERO B.S. LAPS at the LeMons race of your choice. So all you whiners--ahem, legitimate enquirers--who've asked about guaranteed entries and how to avoid B.S. penalties, the answer is now clear: Eine kleine scheissboxen.

Post your entries here: http://forums.24hoursoflemons.com/viewtopic.php?pid=7399#p7399

Or email them to me here: npon@driversdoor.com

Good luck--you'll need it!

Cheers,

Nick

Man, those things are pretty rare even here in East Germany. Apparently you had to be friends with the right Party people to get one.

I need to win that and stick it next to the free Lotus I just put in my backyard. My neigbors will love it.

Did I mention I also have an old Dodge Motorhome beside the house and a whole bunch of rescued dogs?

A free Lotus sounds like the most expensive car anywhere. What did you get?

Now all you need is hundreds of gaudy lawn gnomes and a rooster.

Kinda what Im asking myself right now.

See the worst part is my teammates and I were making a run at the Trifect of Crap this year (BABE/Lemons/GRM all in 1 car 1 year) and we have a nice safe reliable toyota celica.

Now I really feel we must at least try to do it with the wartburg.

Man, and I thought I was a glutton for punishment....I think you might have me beat if you actually do the Trifecta of crap with that car.

That car is rad, it should almost be restored because it is solid and so rare.

Rock on, man, GREAT essay. Dr Seuss on a 3 day meth bender....classic. For the search challenged, this is the paint scheme he should be using:

I actually feel much the same way, but I almost feel like I'd be dishonoring the Lemons organizers and all the other entrants if I didn't run the car now.

I'm sure not many people can say they've ever won a Wartburg before.

You provided an excellent ride, it made perfect sense and actually stood a chance of doing what we are about to attempt.

Where's the adventure in that? As I've always said with the BABE cars, if you aren't afraid of your car, you aren't doing it right. ;)

Technically I missed 2, the Berlina and the Trevi, but I havent even actually seen one of those in the US.

There was alot of um..."artistic license" taken in the essay.

That's a polite way of sayin I let the bacardi do the talkin.

I'm not sure if the term should be won.

Perhaps caught. Nobody has ever said they won an STD....its on the same level.

You have to keep it just for the name. Does anyone remember Wonder Warthog from the old CarToons magazine? That thing needs some teeth protruding from the lower bumper.

Edit: 3 cylinder, 3 coils, 6 volt flattie? My condolences.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/jalopnik/3791454694/in/set-72157621825932153/
