It's either a mechanical switch that the brake pedal lever hits, or a pressure switch on the distribution block/prop valve on the firewall or somewhere in the brake hydraulic circuits near the master cylinder.
Finally got the brake lights to work. Just jumped over the stop light checker. Any chance this will burn up wires or am I good to go?
nah. Those bulbs and wires should all be safely rated for the system. It's not exactly a high amperage circuit, besides the fuse will ultimately protect the wiring from any dangerous failures. 10amp IIRC?

Quick ninja edit: Just make sure your jumper wire is safely insulated and installed in a way that wont allow it to fall back out.
No changes will be required bypassing that box. I recommend fully eliminating it from the taillight circuits.
