So there's a 78 Datsun 510 hatch on CL (http://tucson.craigslist.org/cto/2923304503.html), but since I'm still "in process" for the new job, this is wishful thinking. Hell, once (if?) I get the job, this is still wishful thinking (there'd be no time for it...)
Given that, what other 70's or 80's Datsun parts swap in to these (brakes/struts/axles from a pickup?/gearboxes)? From what I can gather, it's L20B powered, solid rear axle.
Uglier than the originals, but some Panasports and the right "stance" could make it look cool. Gut the interior, some light weight seats, could be cheap fun?
You're going to find very few of us telling you not to buy it.
There will always be another one out there waiting for you once you have a job. :)

Wow, a coupe. Nice.
An acquaintance of mine had the sedan-body with an N/A Sr20. Apparently it's a fairly straightforward swap.
One of those would be absolutely perfect for my fantasy period-correct "JDM" build. You know, fender mirrors, sitting slightly-too-low on some bling '80s 14x7s, etc.

Definitely... as I sit here staring at my Hot Wheels early-style Skyline GTR (yes - not the same car, but close enough for dreaming purposes... )
I once owned the 2 door sedan version of that. If I could come across one today (and didn't need to placate SWMBO) I'd buy it and build a replica of the Datsun factory rally cars. A Safari Rally version might be fun on the rallycross course.
Halibut? You're just asking to have the thread floundered.
Seriously, while it's not a direct bolt in that I'm aware of, a KA24DE might be a good choice for a low buck swap.
