ScarJo did "ok"
But on the case of whitewashing, etc.. in the setting of the story, it's post WWIII, and japan is fiercely nationalistic and as strong as it is post war thanks to it's developments in cyberization. I feel it would be low-likelyhood that a japanese national living and operating in japan would opt for a caucasian face in that environment, especially in a role that a foreginer would not likely be welcome in/create unnecssiary predispostion conflict.
I mean, you just won a war aginst the american empire, and suddenly a white-caucasion cop wants to have a chat with a veteran? That's going to go great.
Granted, nothing in the live-action film actually addresses this, but you could see how it may cause conflicts with people (excessively) familar with the source material. (like me)

I'm liking this Anime word of the day game :D
On GitS, i'm a big enough dork to have imported the Limited Platinum Edition LASERDISC box set. yeah. Imported.
If this one wasn't on your radar, it's a fun 6ep+movie romp called Ex-Driver:

In the future, we've got AI self driving cars everywhere! but... they're buggy. and kinda go off and runnaway (skynet sentience trying to break through?)
Anway.. someone's gotta stop these things, so why not chase them down with an array of sweet ass vintage cars Such as a Lotus Elan, Lotus Super 7, Subaru 22B WRC, and for good measure, a Lancia Stratos. While the animation's a bit dated by today's standards, the vehicle details are fantasic.

I also enjoyed Arise and The New Movie. The live action one, eh. Stylistically, I felt like they nailed it. Scarlett Johansen looked exactly like Major, the guy playing Batou was a dead ringer, the city and cars and general art direction was perfect. But it just seemed to lack the spark, the soul, of Ghost In The Shell.
I think you're the only other person I've heard who had anything good to say about Scarlett Johansen playing the Major. I don't understand people complaining about whitewashing a white actor playing a robot. I thought she did wonderful in it.
I thought she did fine. I think it's also nebulous if the Majors shell in the 95 film is even Asian or Caucasian.
I get that its based off Japanese source material but Major does not look distinctly Japanese. In fact, look at a lot of anime characters, a good percentage of them distinctly do not look Japanese. So I have no issue with caucasian actors playing anime characters in live action adaptations, as long as they look like the character. Now, their decision to make Borma a black guy in the live action GITS, that was an odd one. Although Borma was barely in the film, in fact I don't think they ever even say his name. Too bad, because Borma is one of my favorites.
And now we are really getting out there with this discussion.

One more vote for subtitles, but I have watched so many subtitled shows it does not even register.
If you want fun with detail on "lesser known" cars, watch You're Under Arrest.
It is also fun because one of the main characters is a gearhead doing modifications like swapping a DOHC head onto a SOHC motor and adding nitrous, or putting a tuned motorcycle motor into an old kei car.

Another good one!
You're under arrest has the only known animation of a Lancia Delta Integrale in it too. (at least that I know of)

Awesome Lancia, but sadly the harness went to the floor behind the seat. Still, a lot of tuners made the same mistake back then, too.
Also gotta love the Moto Compo.

Oh man, y'all would love Gunsmith Cats.
I mentioned to a friend that I'd picked up a CZ-75 and they asked, "Like in Gunsmith Cats?" and I had no idea what they were talking about. They explained what it was, but I didn't know it had car stuff in it, too.

Hard to find photos of, but the one pilot in Gundam 00, Neil Dylandy, had a Lancia 037 that showed up in an episode or two.

From the few episodes I watched, I really enjoyed You're Under Arrest, I had posted a link, but kinda deleted thinking it may have been offtopic. But that anime is the reason why I knew about the motocampo. I've watched/read Oh My Goddess from the same author/creator, and he also introduced a lot of gearhead stuff into that series. I recall motocyle racing and the main character working on mechanical stuff.
