I saw a 99 Subaru EJ22 with 119k miles in the junkyard, but I am not sure if it would be usable. The car was hit in the drivers side front and the "frame rail" hit the front of the engine enough to break the drivers side timing belt cover and hit the outer rim of the cam pulley, enough to machine a 1/16 inch groove into the sheet metal. There isn't any other visible damage. Probably junk? Or would it probably be ok. It's pretty much impossible to find an EJ22 with less than double that mileage anymore so that's why I was thinking about it.
I'm not sure where you are located but here is a fully running. driving Legacy 2.2L in Cleveland for only $700. You should be able to part down the rest to $0 quite easy.
The answer is, has it cracked anything that is an integral part of the engine? Covers, pulleys, mounting brackets can come off your engine. Threaded holes into the block with cracked bosses, chipped valve cover rails and such get much more involved.

I am in California, I have a running EJ22 in my car now with similar mileage, but I thought this one might be useful as a spare. It's also the newer style one with the smooth valve covers that uses the later style transmission which is harder to find. There is no external damage that isn't easily removed and replaced, but it pretty much had a another car (or solid object) drive into the camshaft at a 45 degree angle while it was running. I am not sure if that would likely have hurt anything or not.
