Oh absolutely. Turbo is more awesomer in my opinion.

But i was just saying that it's not incredibly hard to get a CRX into the low 13s even using B-series and staying n/a.

i actually saw that already looking and saved the link. my uncle lives outside knoxville so i'm looking down in your area too, tickets arent too much plus i havent seen his new place yet either. though i'm a big fan of a clean car, i'm not a huge yellow fan.

having never driven either generation CRX (but first autocrossing in a 92 civic hatch), and in theory loving both gens for slightly different reasons, i'm going to be spending quite a bit of time in it on the highway, i'll still have my e30 M3 for track days and the jeep for autocrossing, so i'm leaning towards 2nd gen for comfort reasons. the one i want to look at today even has those sick wheels on that black first gen

I was searching Craigslist last night and I found a 91 Civic Si 3-door hatch being sold by the original owners for under $3,000. It had 110k on it and says it was dealer maintained. How rare is that these days? Go to Craigslist and do a $3000 max search around the Boston and South Coast area and you should be able to find it.. I'm at work otherwise I'd post it.

Yes, I'm fully aware of the capability of a turbo'd D16Z6 (12.7 @ 109mph to be exact.) But considering the OP's request for a DD, and no mention of a turbo, and "starting school again" (i.e, not an ITR swap,) I'm assuming he's talking about a full interior N/A B or D series swap.

2300 lbs. and 140hp at the crank does not equal 13 second 1/4 mile times, no matter how many times ricey-ricerson tells himself it does.

Pull out everything in the hatch and look for rust in the spare tire well. Look for evidence of a water leak in the hatch area. If the unibody has been tweaked during the car's life the hatch area can become a swimming pool when it rains. I'm still chasing a water leak in mine.

Our swapped CRX track car was super-reliable. In three years of ownership, it only didn't start once--dead battery. And of course that happened the day it was put up for sale.

Erm, wrong. Stock CRX Si D16A6 is 108hp, the vtec equipped D16Z6 and D16Y8 both put out 127. The head from either car on the CRX block also boosts compression so you're looking at a healthy 20hp bump. http://www.zealautowerks.com/dseries.html Neat tool for all the different Honda engine combinations.

dunno if it's this way with d series but every b series I've seen the non vtec (b18b, b20 etc) has more low end grunt maybe the b18c1 has more power on paper, but the b18b is still quicker without vtec, it has a flatter torque curve and the torque is alot closer to the hp number as well
again, dunno if thats how it is with the d series though, haven't seen alot of people putting money into d motors

that's not uncommon in my searching thus far, and from pics of the one im trying to check out, it looks like the side bolsters are all torn up... so rather than trying to find good condition stock si seats, are there good other seats like from integras or something that's more common to find in good shape? and fit without too much fab?

As much as I hate hondas, I owned a CRX. Mostly because I helped a friend put an engine in it in january. It was only 30deg in the garage....and I bought it later that year for $400, and traded it for a s13 and 1600 cash.

Too bad you guys weren't looking back then, it was a super clean FL car with a B18B in it. I think it had a bad map sensor or tps or something because it wasn't quite quick on the throttle, and lacked response off idle. Still pulled decently and made good over all power and got great mpg beating around the city.

Didn't even have a fart cannon either, a normal style 2.25in exhaust. Wasn't bad for a honda....just wasn't RWD. And my bolt on 240sx was still faster.

Its forsale too I think, but its in MI.

I've always secretly wanted a crx or eg hatch. I see these cars, and their motor swaps as the modern version of the 32 ford hot rod. cheap plentiful cars, fast cheap engines.

Si seats are your only real bolt-on option, besides better condition HF or DX seats if yours are -that- gone. I adapted EF sedan seats to fit with a pan swap which required transferring a seat-back bracket from one pan to another, cut and welded. Even after extensive foam shaping it just never sat right for my 6' frame. Too high and park-bench flat, but oh what sweet lumbar support. But it was off enough for me to go back to the demolished seats and live with back pain for a while longer.

Prelude seats are my next attempt. I've even got a spare set of trashed HF seats to be sacrificed if necessary.

If you go looking for seats, know that even the same year Civic si seats don't just bolt in. The CRX si seats are made to sit lower in the car. And if you are tall, keep in mind that the ceiling of the CRX is lower than the Civic, which is one reason why it doesn't have the same slide-in-roof sunroof that the Civic si does.

alright, so i checked it out and i think i broke multiple rules of carbuying... like looking at a black car at night, or howabout considering a nonregistered car i plan to DD? plus it was literally buried in snow when i got there.

i'm conflicted on this one. i checked every area you guys mentioned and couldnt find a spot of rust anywhere, it reminded me of our southern jeep XJ-R.

the good:
the engine sounded good, ran smoothly, and felt really strong (at least around the block)
all new brakes, front end bushings/BJs, rear TA bushings, recent stock muffler,
stock suspension to start from
surprisingly good unpitted glass headlights that worked really well
mostly new hoses everywhere in the engine bay
new timing belt, water pump, heater core

the bad:
sounds like a vacuum leak very high idle ~1800rpm, then surges from 800-1800 when trying to idle warm. he said idle increases when sprayed with carb clean, so probably just a leak. leaks a lot of oil, so much that i couldnt follow it anywhere because its everywhere
3rd gear feels a little crunchy going in at normal-quick speed, fluid change to help?
there was moisture in the hatch area, dampness around the probably original taillight gaskets, he said it may drip water from the shock prop bump? just a slight beginning of surface rust in the wheelwell though, nothing bad. sunroof opens, but only manually with a socket.... bad motor/switch/wiring?
CEL is on, he says its a single ecu lead from the p28/distributor swap to turn it off that he didnt get to, but he says it throws codes properly right now.

the indifferent:
its been repainted black, and is a little coarse feeling
clutch pedal engagement feels low, but it has a new cable and somewhat recent clutch so i'm guessing its just not set right.
there's a small bit of wiring i'd want to redo, and i'm not a big fan of that, but it doesnt really scare me

i'm mixed though because ive never seen a car this rust free up here, andi its got a ton of new stuff in it, but i couldnt take it for a long drive, see it in the light, and theres the engine/ecu/oil/trans stuff that worries me.

The surging idle sounds like IACV. They go bad. Every last one of them.

Third gear is usually the first to go in my experiences. The synchro is probably about shot. Flush and replace with Acura Syncromesh. I swear by it. (Sounds like Frank's Red Hot: I put that E36 M3 on everything!)

he said he took it apart and cleaned it all out. still i wouldnt rule it out of course until i get my hands on it. but a bad iacv wouldnt increase rpm with a shot of carb clean on the intake manifold gasket area

Haven't gotten my hands on any 1st or 2nd gen Integra seats yet, but I think it will be a case where they fit the hatchbacks pretty easily but not the CRXs without some bracket surgery. But I'm willing to try it, so Integra seats are also on my radar.

I -know- I've seen 'teg seats in an EF hatchback, don't recall if I've ever seen them in a CRX.

Wilber: I'd probably walk. Signs point to a good swap, and I wouldn't worry too much about the idle surge, but crappy respray, leaky hatch and leaking buckets of oil doesn't bode well for a DD. There will be others. Like Grandpa used to say "Never get in a big hurry to spend a whole lotta money."

Personally, I'd look for a relatively stock, well maintained example. Yes, they're few and far between, but you can bet your ass one would pop up tomorrow if you bought that basket case today.
