I recently acquired a 2003 Tahoe 5.3 4x4 with 250,048 miles on it, the rear end makes some noise, that's it, needs a ball joint- 18$ from autozone and a pitman arm- ~35$ runs great pretty rusty but what can you expect from MA, always mobil one, one owner all highway miles

Having just replaced those parts I can tell you it's a very time consuming job, and you probably will have to buy some tools to make it a lot easier.

  • 3/8" Allen key socket. (for removing brake caliper)
  • 36mm Axle nut socket. (for axle nut.. duh)
  • 16" or longer pickle fork (for removing center link from pitman arm)
  • 4lbs mini sledge (unless your the hulk your not moving that pickle fork with a framing hammer)
  • Pitman Arm separator (this ones pretty obvious)

Go ahead and replace the idler arm too while you're there and do both lower ball joints.
