+1 the notion that you can always go back to a mustang later but not so often will this crop up.

The only 944's (any of the variants) that are going to hold their value or appreciate are the ones that are already costly to buy.  Ie, the low mileage, totally stock, completely cared for, documented cars.

In other words, a very, very small proportion of them out there.  Most of these have been cheap cars for way too long and will cost a veritable suitcase load full of time, money and effort to get up to daily driver reliability status. 

I'd just try and find the best one you can afford, make sure the large jobs have been done and the seller has the paperwork to prove it, then go off and enjoy it.  Chances are its going to continue to depreciate on you...

Mustang. Easy to find, buy and install parts. Dramatically faster, sounds better, and more reliable.
