$10 says the Tesla will launch late and be far heavier than planned.
I'll take that bet because the Tesla is already out, customer's have already taken delivery of them and blasted mid-9s bone stock, and they have weighed in at 4700lbs.
Welp. You lose. Cyber truck is in defiantly delayed.

I wasn't talking about the Cybertruck. I was talking about the Model S Plaid.
You're cross shopping the S plaid with the Hummer?
In the conversation I had with my boss, I had offhandedly said something about the Model S Plaid being an insane piece of machinery, I had just seen a news article or a video on it or something. He then proceeded to go "The new Hummer is going to be really fast though". So he was the one that cross-shopped it, for lack of a better turn of phrase. I mentioned the weight, he responded with "Yeah, but it has 1000hp", I replied with so does the Tesla but at half the power.
I honestly wasn't even aware the Cybertruck was going to have a Plaid trim until now.
Sorry for the confusion.

With all the torques at zero RPM will it light the tires? It likely came with low rolling resistance ones that should light up easily, or do electronic nannies spoil that?

If you turn the traction control off, it will, though it's definitely trying to be gentle.
The Bolt has tons more power than it gives. I don't feel all of the pull until I am going maybe 45 mph. I can feel inconsistencies in the power delivery up until then, though I don't run with the traction control often. I don't know what the differential and axle can handle, but if you hit it with 100% torque from the start, I suspect its 0-60 would drop by another second. It is not trying to be a quick sports car.

I don't care how ridiculously quick it is, I have less than zero interest in a daily-use vehicle that weighs nearly 5 BERKING TONS.
And I'm definitely a little squeamish at the thought of GM setting 5-ton, 1000hp vehicles loose in the hands of the general public.
I think this is the closest thing yet to the Canyonero being a real vehicle. What is lacks in size and mass it makes up for in kinetic energy. At least it's eco-friendly?

I see. No worries. It's an odd comparison to give the boss and it threw a bunch of us off. The S Plaid is cool and all, but I won't be in a Tesla product for a good long time. Frankly I can't see much use in a Hummer for me either though. I am too practical, I want a EV van with 350 miles of range, I don't really care how fast it is.

I had to go check this cuz I was just certain it was innerweb meme bs. *certain* of it. Well, it ain't. They did. GM went with WOW, WTF....

Occasionally I'll just rip for a while with the Bolt and it is quite entertaining. It isn't even intended to be quick, it just is.
Funny how that full torque at zero RPM things works......A Bolt is FWD only, right?
Yup. I bought mine simply to reduce $/mile, but wow it's fun to squirt around with no hit to longevity of anything.
Except the tires of course

Wait for straight lines and leave the traction control on and they're mostly fine.
Watts to Freedom
I wonder what they're going to call it in Europe
I want a EV van with 350 miles of range, I don't really care how fast it is.
This is what the EV world needs but the Mfgrs are to wrapped up in HP and 0-60 times to make common sense ev vehicles for the masses. A fleet vehicle contract for Verizon or Amazon is not sexy but it is what is needed.

Keep in mind, for something like an EV truck, making it not-fast would almost involve artificially limiting it.
Once you've got enough battery for 350 miles of range, you can pull a good bit of short term load out of the batteries. And once you size the motors, cooling, etc. to be able to haul a decent load up a hill without overheating things, they can often handle a short-term burst of a good bit more power.
So unlike an ICE vehicle, by the time you give an EV decent continuous power output and good range, the vast majority of what you need to make it fast is already there. At that point, might as well spend a few extra bucks on the motor controllers and wiring, program it for the higher peak output and let it be fast because big advertising numbers will sell enough extra copies to offset the incremental cost.

Just for the record, I didn't say I wouldn't want it to be fast, just that it isn't relevant. Also we all know that most every car is "limited artificially" through different means. The Bolt, as I mentioned above, is very gentle with how much torque it's willing to give the wheels. I suspect that, had the GM engineers given launch mode and all manner of other things to the Bolt, that it would need bigger cv shafts, bigger differential parts, bigger hubs etc to meet their durability standards. That's likely why it weighs 3500 lb. So if my hypothetical EV minivan was calibrated to accelerate the same as my Pentastar Pacifica (which is quick enough once the transmission understands what to do) I would be 100% satisfied with my 350 miles of range.

Probably 300 miles of actual range, should be good, no?
And yeah, can attest, the Bolt is way quicker than it needs to be to get the job done. And nowhere as quick as it COULD be given the 266 lb ft of torque at 0 rpm...

Big question mark there. The inputs required to building a 10,000 pound vehicle are considerable. Steel, upholstery, rubber...and let's not forget the super green batteries sourced from the most environmentally conscious and transparent country on Earth.
I work with one of those 40-50 year old women who drove an H2 because "they don't make them anymore". Rust and GM build quality finally wrenched the wretched thing out of her hands. She bought a Ridgeline to replace it, and loves it.

Indeed. I have had my eye on that thing for a while. It's nearly there. I wish it had more microbus look to it, but if they release it like that, it will likely replace the Pacifica.
