Did anyone see that one of the American Le Mans teams is offering a way to get your name on their car by registering web addresses through their GoDaddy-like partner called Namesilo? Very cool. The article says to just enter the promo code ALMS at the Namesilo site.

SB, you show up and make one post advertising some web site. This is highly indicative of a spammer, which is code worded a Canoe here in GRM land. Now, you may be a legitimate newby, which is fine, but it is still suspect to just show up and start advertising other web sites.

I got that ALMS email too, but didn't check out the details.

I'll be going to the Baltimore Grand Prix and Petit Le Mans this year, and noticed that the ALMS site is also looking for race weekend volunteers. have any of you guys done that? I'm curious about what would be involved.

Define "volunteer". If they're talking about folks to help the ALMS staff, I have no idea..but usually when the sanctioning body talks about "volunteers", they're talking about staffing the turns and such. If that is what they mean, yeah, I've done it..and have been doing so on-and-off for about 25yrs. Here's a primer to what's involved, created by one of my old Corner Worker buddies.

Seriously, it's the 2nd best seat in the house. You're usually a lot closer to the cars (especially in this day & age of modern safety barriers), and you're actually a participant in the event, instead of a spectator. Find your local SCCA Region, and e-mail the "Flagging and Communications" Chief about coming out to work. We're a little thin on the ground these days, trust me..the Chief will love to hear from you. I have to warn you, though..whether or not you'll be allowed to work a Pro race with a beginners' license really depends on how Byzantine your local SCCA Region's policies are about it (although it seems that with the nationwide worker shortage, most regions aren't as anal about it as they were when I started). Usually, just working a couple of SCCA or NASA or vintage club races will give you what you need to know about doing the job (as long as you have good teachers) before working something like ALMS (those cars are so berkeleying FAST!! Bad stuff happens in a heartbeat with those things, and when you're inside the fence, it's your job to handle a lot of it). It's actually kind of like driving..start out with the little slow cars, and work your way up to the big ones.

You also should know that in return, the Pro sanctioning bodies don't charge you an admission fee if you're working (although when you first get started, you might spend more on your gear than you would have on the tix in the first place..but shopping with a GRM attitude will help with that-and now that I've been doing it for so long, my entire cost to drive to/work/camp at an ALMS event is a helluva lot cheaper than it would be to buy tix with equal access to the event), and as a worker, you'll have a credential that allows you into about 95% of the racetrack without having to pay extra. Heck, a lot of the time, I get into the other 5% just because I'm wearing my uniform.

And I'll end here without wasting another 5000 characters of text on the great times I've had, the great people I've known, and the great drivers I've met over the years that I've been "dumb" enough to do this E36 M3.

More than likely though, the volunteers ALMS is looking for are people to work crowd control and the parking lot.

You'll need to log in to post.
