Back up, wait a minute. Responsible adult moment about to take place. So the fleet includes a '97 Miata, a '99 Suburban, an '07 Passat, and the teenagers beater Altima. The grown up side of me realized last night that the Suburban at 240,000 miles is getting long in the tooth and it's designated duty of kid hauling and family trips will suck the day the trans pukes across three lanes 1,000 miles from home.

So I find myself thinking that getting a 5-7 grand GMT800 from say 2005 with just over 100,000 miles might be the smart dad thing to do. Then sell current 'burb for maybe $2,500 and put it aside in the rainy day fund for when something cheap and autocrossy comes along (like that $1,000 supercharged Miata )

Any sage advice here? Anyone have just the perfect burb for me? Anyone interested in my beast of burden (it works fine, I just don't have 100% faith in it anymore)

edit* My commute is ridiculously short so MPGs really don't matter very much. Reliability and ability to haul 2 adults and 4 teenagers is critical.

Sell the burb, sell the Miata, get a new DD that can tow a tiny amount and go get an FM car for fun and speed.

(I would have done this if my local club allowed non-street cars)

Or a shifter kart is always an option if you arent too achy in the body...

Funny you ask this question, I asked (and answered) my very own version of this question last year. Same price too.

Check this out.
