Just like the title says, does the X5 diesel suck? Looking to change the fleet around and get a DD that gets better MPG than a crew cab 4x4 F250, while still keeping AWD/4WD and decent room and luxury.

Friend has one. His current problem is that his wife won't let him have it back. Her characterization was that it "purrs like a kitten until it roars like a lion."
Carbon buildup in the intake system and through the EGR cooler may be a concern-- though it's not much different than BMWs gasoline direct injection engines from that standpoint. He's had to replace the idle air valve (two position throttle) due to it being gunked up and throwing codes.
Also, there's a fueling funnel kit available for it-- apparently you want that to make sure you can get it filled when you're running in a panic from station to station trying to find diesel.
Can you do the standard diesel tricks to them? Straight pipe, flash, etc? Or is there no tuning on them. Looking like a high mile 2010 (80k?) can be had for under 20 - seems like an OK deal.
The F250 may stay or may go depending on how much I can get for it. Clean southern truck, 02 Lariat FX4 4x4 7.3 diesel crew cab short bed, with a few mods. Wanna buy it? I would like to buy something classic and 2wd and bagged for home derpot running.
My neighbor has one and loves it. He only tows an ATV with it, so I can't verify that they are a tow monster or anything like that.
I suspect that significantly raising power with the X5 diesel would significantly shorten the life of the transmission.
With OBDII and modern emissions systems I doubt there are any quick and easy upgrades for them. They pull like a freight train, so I doubt you'll feel the need to upgrade anyway.
I've seen a few with catalyst, urea injection system, and EGR faults with low miles recently. Just assume the usual European high maintenance and high repair costs with them.
