Not just any Benz, of course:

Wow, I wonder who had it.
I had the pleasure of attending Fangio's 80th birthday celebration in Balcarce, Argentina (his hometown) back in the early 90's. I was 13 or 14 years old and will never forget that day.
So when it says power is "taken off center" does that mean the flywheel is geared to the driveshaft? Sounds interesting!

Pretty sure it just means the power is taken out of the motor with a gear between #4 and #5 to minimize crank twisting. Rather than a flywheel on one end. Twisting is a big problem when you go past a straight 6, this is why the 190e cosworth and E30 M3 had 4 cylinder engines.
I wonder how offset the cam lobes are clocked from end to end so the cam is "straight" in the power band.
