44 is such a nice drive once you're outside of DeLand. I used to take that all the time to MSCC.
JG - the back way to Sebring through YeeHaw Junction is much longer distance wise but wide open roads, no stop lights, and less stressful than 27 is these days. You could do 95, cut across 60 to 441, head south, hang a right on 98 and another right to the track and avoid I-4 all together.

How do you stop yourself from picking up an extra piece of yard art every time you pass through Barberville?

Totally hear you.
We regularly autocross in Tavares with Martin Sports Car Club. I can either take I-4 or go the scenic route. I opt for the non-highway option out 40 and through Lake County.
I've taken two trips to New Smyrna Beach to visit a friend (also autocrosser, which now I have a place to crash for Daytona events now), and the i4 route you have to Taveres is how it takes me home back to Tampa. Here I am calling that the scenic route to get home from Apoka to i75 lol since it makes me avoid the mess near the Championsgate exit.
The route to Taveres from Tampa changed a lot recently. I used to take EC 470 from I75 to Lake Tech, but that all changed and turned into the Villages up the the turnpike area. It made sense why Google was telling me to through Webster or SR50 because the one time I drove through there I was shocked to see how the fast straight route of ec470 turned into roundabouts. I think the route will get worse if the Villages keeps moving south.
Not sure if anyone here has mentioned it yet, but they recently connected the 417 and 429 toll roads north of Orlando (just a stone's throw away from me) that, in theory, has created a loop/ring road that circles just about the entirety of Orlando.
The verdict is still out if taking the toll roads is actually better than taking I-4, but at least its another option.
I think the norm anymore is to see 8 cars lined up in the left lane with their adaptive cruise control on while texting or just watching YouTube while running about 79 mph (too slow) and everybody in the middle and right lanes trying to get past them.
On I-4 and 95, the right lane seems to have become the de facto passing lane (even in my Miata). Bizzaro world. Florida driving has become pretty Mad Maxlike.

I-15 LA to Vegas
Much of it is 2 lane with a combo of trucks (55 mph towing in CA), people jacked up to party in Vegas, tourists, and everything else in between
This drive is always romanticized by Hollywood, hence the tourists, but it is generally just miserable
I took I-4 to Orlando earlier this week. Not my worst I-4 experience.
And totally (not) looking forward to possibly three trips on I-4 this week....
Having lived all over the US my early Miata and I have driven some really terrible highways. I'll admit I4 is bad but it's hard to pick a worst, lol. There are so many jam packed wreckless roads out there.

We drove I-4 this weekend–and survived!
Although it did seem like a few people were trying to kill us. More than a few instances of people just not able to keep in their own lane. “Hello, we’re kinda driving over here.”
