I equated their performance to an AirCooled Beetle.

In reply to RedGT: That is where the 6 speed dual clutch helps. Just a little push on the gas pedal.

The 2 friends were both in YJ Wranglers on 33s. 1 with a 6cyl, 1 with a 4cyl. At one point, we're coming up I-81 climbing one of the long hills. Doing 70 or a little better. 4cyl guy had been at the back of the group for a bit at this point. Part way up the hill, we get a call on the CB: "can you guys slow down? I'm in 3rd gear at almost redline and wide open and I can't do better than 68." Oops, I guess we should have put the slow guy at the front...
Four cylinder YJs were awful, especially the TBI motors. Not bad from 0-40, but after that you really feel those jeep "aerodynamics". It felt like you were pulling a plow. I don't know why they even put a fifth gear in it, you couldn't use it. I had a six cyl YJ and when I would trailer it to offroad parks I would fold the windshield down, it made a noticeable difference in how easily it pulled.
I'm finding 160HP, 88ft/lbs and one wheel drive to be absolutely be "more than enough" power to make 500lbs move thru time and space. I got used to it pretty quickly ... but I have not been in any situation where I have thought "Gee, if only I could fling myself at the horizon a little harder...". I have wished I had AC once or twice though.

So I was working in Elko, NV at the time and was coming back from a trip to Cheyenne, WY. So for those who have never been there, The run from Green River, WY to beaver creek that starts at 6K ft and goes to just under 8500 FT just there by SLC. Take an at that time 18 year old civic which at best was 64 HP, fill it up with a week of camping gear and even with a little light weight civic, I couldn't go much faster than 40-45 most of that stretch. The GLC I had before that wasn't much better.
When you gotta back up to get enough speed for a speed bump (Bugeye Sprite).
When you get passed by a Bugeye Sprite on a long uphill! (1987 Mazda pickup).

Oh, that reminds me. I had a really nice looking 3.4L 95 Firebird. It lost a race to my 04 Mazda3 2.0/auto.
1981 Volkswagen Dasher wagon with the 1.3 liter diesel. 43 horsepower and no revs teaches you a lot about why freeways have an "acceleration lane," turn off A/C when pulling into traffic, and really plan your passes.
