Car came with no gear, gear carrier and cable, and the speedo was broken(magnet came off). The bolt that holds the gear carrier in the trans was sheared off. I scratched my head for a while, fixed the speedo, and put a new gear, used carrier, and freshly lubed used cable in it. Gear in the trans looked good. The second I moved the car it did the same damn thing again, shoved the gear and carrier out 1/4", shearing off the bolt.

WTF?

Are you really worried about breaking the speed limit in a Yugo?

you do have to make sure you are maintaining a minimum speed of 45 on the interstate...

The speedo doubles as the tach, with red marks indicating when the poor little motor has revved enough in each gear.

It would be easier to just install a tach.

May want to ask on a Fiat forum like Mirafiori or Xweb. That problem almost has to have happened to someone for a cause to be known.

But a tach would cost money, I already went over budget getting this car on the road. Already asked on Mirafiori, forgot about xweb, will post over there.

At first I thought this said "Yugo speed issues" and thought "Well yeah, it's a Yugo"

Found the problem, diff pin sticks way out of the carrier on one side, it held in place by a slot in the pin and a piece of sheet metal bolted to the carrier, the pin is clearanced on one side for the speedo drive, it spun the pin, one of the spider gears is locked to it. Time to hunt down a transaxle. Though it did survive a small burnout at woodward in that condition, if you heard a crowd chanting YUGO YUGO YUGO in Birmingham yesterday, that was me(burnout was done after I found the spun pin, not before).

How bad do you need a transaxle? I'm reluctant to give up spares that Im short on and I only have one spare, its a 5 speed out of a 91 GV+

If you dont find something else give me a holler, like I said, its my backup so I'd rather not loose it, but I'd rather not see you down if I'm sitting on a part you need.

Call Steve Hoelscher.

He'll have several in storage, and the ability to build the one you've got into awesomeness.

Agreed. Steve would be my first call if I sold you my spare so I could get a new spare and he knows how to build a 128/X19/Yugo transmission like no other.

Looks like a few somewhat close salvage yards have 4 speeds for $100 or less. I think I will go that route and stay 4 speed unless I can find a 5 speed box closer to me. Though the concept of highway travel without earplugs is somewhat appealing, it's also fun to have an excuse to be that revved up all the time.

FWIW the 4 speed is a better box overall. I keep the 5 speed as a backup but the YFH has a Hoelsher built 4 speed in it as it's primary.
