My sister broke the driver's side window crank on her ZX2, snapping the metal shaft that goes to the crank mechanism inside the door. I went to the junkyard today and tried to get the mechanism from a scrapped ZX2, but it looks to me like I would have to take everything window-related out of the door (glass, tracks, crank, etc.) just to replace that one part on my sister's car. All of the pulleys and such are connected via cables coming from the crank mechanism.

I'm going to try repairing the shaft by getting it out of the window crank, J.B. Welding it back together, and telling her to take it easy when she opens the window. If that doesn't work, does anyone here have any other suggestions? Sorry if my terminology was wrong or you don't know what I'm talking about; I've never disassembled a door before. I'll try to get pictures tomorrow.

You will likely need the entire regulator assembly. Besides that they are usually an assembly, there is probably something binding if the shaft snapped.

Maybe a whole new door the same color?

Not gonna happen. She has to pay for any parts I get for her car. She's a recent college grad in a E36 M3ty economy. 'Nuff said.
