How is the Versys for your height?

Wow! That a lot of change (all for the better!) since the last time I checked on this! Love that versy.

I forgot to let ya know; when I got my "new" k75s, I was up in the bike parts loft, and the givi top case ain't up there. Must have been some of the parts that the locals need more than meangry

The pelican case looks better on there anyway!

BTW, since the K has a windscreen that needs to be taller, how did the fle-bay shield add on work out? Too flimsy? Mine does have a wonderlutch screen with the lip, but stock size. I might try a add on, but the Lamanar Lip is enough money, I'd just buy a new taller screen.

In reply to OHSCrifle :

oh apparently I never did any updates on the versys...

great bike for the tall... I did add some lowering peg brackets... they drop the pegs by 33mm (1.3") and then I installed some and I also installed a spacer block to bring the front of the saddle up by about 20mm... that is more because the stock saddle has a forward slope... this levels it out a bit... I also added the screen clip on/riser... I'll  post more about this stuff in a min... if anyone remembers my build threads of old... I like to ramble and post a lot of pictures haha... (man I miss my mr2 :(

so far I've put about 2000 miles on it... coming up soon on needing it's 2nd service (I got it with first service done)...  I ride it pretty much all the time if I'm not having to move something too large  or transport a person or my dog... my pickup truck has only had one fill up since the great freeze that happened back in Feb... and I prob would still be on that tank if I didn't help a friend move haha...

so the peg lowering brackets and some chinese foot peg covers that remove the stupid rubber covers... the nice thing is this lowered the foot peg maybe another 5-10mm and gave a bit more surface area

this shows the size/height diff between the stock rubber pad

the next "mod" I did was raise the front of the saddle... it's an old school versys trick, the white block is where the front seat tabs are so it's not putting all of my weight stress onto the front tab but onto the original pads made to take the weight... it puts a little gap but it made it so I didn't slide forward near as badly... it's some 3d printed bits that I printed out (part of my excursin into the RC world for the last few years haha)... I found the plans on tinkercad and it was one of the better designs i've seen and its 100% infill (so solid)... we'll see how long the PLA lasts... I'll get around to reprinting it in PETG at some point but i've put prob over 1000 miles on it like this so far without an issue.

at that same time I finally installed these spools... I got them at the same time I got the peg covers but I ordered them in 10mm when I needed 8mm (I think that was the sizes)... instead of sending them back to china I printed out a spacer and picked up the right size bolts... again 100% infill and because they aren't in direct sunlight I'm not too woried about UV light degrading the PLA.

as it's warmed up here in houston I've played with a few things to keep myself comfortable while riding... I removed the bar control covers but left the metal bars... makes for comfortable place to put hands while on longer rides but biggest thing is it protects my controls if/when I drop it...

you can also see the cheap clip on shield... it made riding about perfect up to around 60mph or so... no need for hearing protection with my Shuberth c3 pro helmet... I can ride with the visor open fairly comfortably when I want and noise is pretty solid... but as soon as I get up over 65mph or so it's not enough :-/... you'll also notice the bungie net on the back seat and the beads on the seat... this was after a near 300 mile ride I went on with a small group (old friend invited me out)

oh you can also see the mirror extensions in  this picture... anyone that knows me in person knows I'm a big guy... John brown/Quasi mofo likes when I'm around because it makes him feel small... lol.

another minor mod was this heads up bar and the USB plug (with voltage indicator)... this is an old spare phone... it has an OLED screen using a cheap Chinese phone mount... I only use this on longer rides (this is a pic of me after getting home after a 290 mile ride)... I have the quad lock on my bars which holds my daily driver phone and tether it to the android phone

another recent mod was this bar riser... after my first near 300 mile day my upper back/shoulders where trashed for a week... this brought the bars up and back a little bit and made the ride night and day difference... I'm going to try a few different versions and then buy a quality version because this thing is cheap in the quality aspect... I was hesitant to ride with it.... but the $18 shipped gave me good verification that it would be worth spending the $90 or so for a proper ROX riser or something like that.

last mod I've done... I changed the windscreen to a Chinese knock off Puig screen... it's larger than the stock WITH the clip on... around town it was just as good as the stock with the clip but it gave a bit more wind coverage to the hand and maybe my shoulders because of how wide it is... but it buffets much worse than the stock+ clip on setup at 65+... then when I added the clip on the entire thing was too tall even with the clip on at it's lowest height and the screen at it's lowest height... I had to look though the top screen and I really don't like that feel and it still do enough for me at 80ish mph... so on the last 300 mile ride I just pulled off the screen and straped it to my back seat and rode without a screen... I'm going to get one of the lower profile clip on screens which can run almost even with the screen when in their lowest position and it should let me play with the angle to change how it moves air.... until I get that I'll just run the stock + clip on combo... at least once I get the screen back on... for now I'm riding without haha.

... this was part of the group I rode with... nice bunch of guys... started as 3 harleys, a bmw K1100, an early 2ks suzuki cruiser bike (my buddies) and my versys.

oh... I also added some gear... an old MTB buddy of mine from back in Pensacola was getting rid of some stuff that he put up on his page... XL shuberth C3 pro helmet, Klim riding jeans, and some icon boots... he rode just a few years back but for only part of a season before he got hard core on being debt free and he sold his motorcycle... everything was very lightly used and stored in a box in one of his closets haha... the helmet fit perfect except I had to goto the 2xl cheek pads because i've got fat cheeks... the jeans I expected to be a little snug but fit PERFECTLY (yay for weight loss and being under 300# for the first time in prob 15 years.... the boots are solid... all said it was $250... not bad considering the helmet still sells new for nearly $600 (had a near $800 price tag on the box) and the jeans are $300 new

I also added a Cardo for the helmet... music makes riding so much better and it's nice being able to text or take a call from my family or work while i'm riding.... I also found some nice Five gloves on clearance that where priced right and I love them... enough protection that I'm not worried but they breathe well.

and other random pictures

this is the last long ride I took... 290 miles... I'm doing a thing called the motorcycle grand tour of Texas... it has 50 stops to go visit and take pictures with... to finish you have to hit 25 of them... so far i'm on my 3rd lol... I've been doing stuff that is closer to me before I do a bit longer ride... getting the bike setup for comfort...

this was on the way back from the picture stop... it's the nuclear power plant SW of houston...

and the wind turbines a few miles away from the nuclear power plant... I had no idea we had these this close to houston... also fitting as it's at a cattle gate... so Texas lol... (also note the windscreen on the back seat...

the actual stop I was going to the La Salle Monument in Port Lavaca... I mentioned I got into RC right... so I drag along my small drone on these rides lol...

and while I was clening up the garage a little while back I got the last picture of them side by side before I started ripping into the BMW.

back to our relgularly scheduled program...

some random carb work... rebuilt it with a kit i found on ebay... only to find that the jets and everything where sized differently... thankfully the needle and jets where all in good enough condition to clean up so I swapped over the O rings and such and put her back together nice n clean... several of the jets where completely closed up so it makes sense that things wern't running right haha.

so time to start some body work... sanding to key the surface and fill the OEM turn signal spots.

I put some tape behind the hole for filler...

I'd used something similar to this back on my old mr2 spoiler center shave... this is such a small area I saw no reason to go with fiberglass and bondo haha.

applied with some feathering out to the edge.

sanded down nice and smooth.

one of the side panels sanded... need to get in there with some hand sanding to get in the nooks and crannies... only have one more of these and the front fender... then I'll spray it with some bed liner.

this is the license bracket I picked up this will mount directly to the frame after some trimming around the top and I'll mount the brake light will mount to this bracket as well... I xeroxed the bracket on some card stock so I'll be able to cut up the card stock to get a clean fit and then transfer that over to the metall bracket... easier than just taking the grinder to the bracket.

also had some parts come in... the shock is from a 2k1+ f650gs so it'll raise the rear about 1" more than the funduro shock (which is what I found was on my bike)... my clutch is also very worn out, if I set the leaver to have any freeplay it won't release even when fully against the bars so I have to put some pretension on it... i'm risking a used clutch kit... it can't be any worse than what I have and I'm not willing to spend the few hundred bucks on a replacment.

and my last update... I ordered my dash kit... A trail tech vapor... Im going to 3d print a bracket for it that will also hold the blinkers, oil pressure, high beam, and neutral lights...

donalson
donalson PowerDork
6/7/21 2:10 a.m.

hopped out to the garage to do some odds and ends... can never really focus on one thing at a time cause adult ADHD haha.

started working and finishing up the rear tag mount... I found the LED tag mount lights I'd ordered forever ago so it was the last thing I needed to finish it up.  I started with the cardstock scan of the bracket, cut it out to get real close to the needed cutting on the metal... I need to pick up some properly sized washers and I'll be able to do the final mount... I bent the sides so it doesn't stick out beyond the tag and it'll make a perfect spot for mounting some reflectors... a lick of paint after the cutting/drilling and it is ready to go.

I then pulled the crash bars... they need to be removed to change the clutches anyway... a little more fiddly than expected, one bolt was nicely cross threaded so I'll have to replace that... I'm not sure if I like the way it looks without... I might do some minor changes to it if they go back on... but that will be later.

on a side note... my shelter dog that we rescued back in Feb seems to be taking well to garage time... the shelter called him Tate so natrually I named him Tater Tot *shrug* lol...

I then pulled out the stock shock... apparently the lower fork mount bolt was broken *eek* I ended up having to pull the triangle mount thing to get it out... I'll have to remove the bolt from the shock at some point (the other side of the shock fork mount is threaded)

i removed the preload compression adjuster/can thing and slapped it onto the 2k+ 650 GS shock that I got cheap on ebay because it was missing the preload adjuster... it was a gamble but I figured the stock one would work, I do need to refill the can (have to figure out what sort of fluid it uses) but it has enough that I was able to notice it adding compression so that was nice

GS is on the left, old is on the right

compressor backed out 100% and then in all the way... only about 5mm of compression on the stock shock but it works which is the important part.

and a quick few snaps of what it looks like while in progress... I slapped on the old turn signals on it and I'm not sure I like them or the 4x7 headlight... but i'll likely stick with that stuff for now as it's easy to change down the road... also not sure I like it without the crash bars *shrug* but i'll keep it off for a while.

custom re-dash is getting close to finished.

I got the test section for my lights printed out and I'm fairly pleased with how it came out I may look to have the top/cover done in acrylic like the stock gauge design but I haven't decided on that yet. a DRZ 400 ignition sits in the left most spot of the "cluster" the vapor will do speedo, tach, coolant temp (hence no warning light for the water temp on my new light indicators), ambient temp, time, and hrs run on the engine... my original thought was the top green portion but wanted something a little more compact and cleaner looking (I also didn't want the LEDs shining directly into my eyes) so I'm printing the final pre-print out to get it all fitted and make sure it works properly before going to the potential final print which will be in a different material that can handle higher temps and the sun.

donalson
donalson PowerDork
6/22/21 2:11 a.m.

hmm seems I missed an update or two here haha...

I got a bit further with the gauge mount... still needs some tweaking but an issue presented itself on the 3d printer... so I need to dig into that and see whats up... could be a simple wiring or solder pad issue (common with my model) or at worse the motherboard... so here we are up to this point... the top portion is about 1mm too close to the vapor itself... already fixed in design.

another day I added fluid to the preload tensioner... I pulled the banjo bolt and hose off from the tensioner, added a little fluid and then put it back together, it still didn't cause pressure until the last 2 or 3 clicks, apart it came again and I gently pushed a screw driver into the adjuster, the piston inside slid down nicely and then I went to fill it up again, this time instead of about 1-2ml of fluid it took 5 or 6 syringes full (3ml per syringe).

I just used some hydro jack oil I've had sitting in my garage forever, I did first pour out the old fluid which was maybe 1ml tops.

I posted it fully seated (soft/no preload) to max preload... I also posted an older picture that was max preload after just swapping the preload adjust from the 011 stock shock to the later '00+ 650 GS shock... prior I didn't get any pressure until the last few clicks, now I feel pressure shortly after the 1st click... it also looks like it's giving a lot more preload.

today I got around to installing the shock... I had to remove the bolt from the bottom of the stock shock to get the bracket back in... a small drill bit started rotating it out, a larger finished getting it out.

once I got the taller shock installed, I installed the bottom brackets into place and then then had to lift the frame of the bike up to get the shock into place up top... it's far more firm now and it feels like the shock isn't completely blown any longer haha... the only issue I have now is that because of the extra height the bike no longer sits properly on the center stand (has to sit on a 1/2"-3/4" thick board)... I'll weld on some spacers at the bottom at some point... also the stock kick stand will need to get a little longer at some point... but I'm not worried about that while in my garage... just when it gets real windy outside... no pics of that though.

I also got water temp sensor adapter for the trail tech.  the unit comes with an inline hose adapter but being that I have no need for the stock idiot light when the trail tech has an actual temp sensor (and idiot light) so I was able to dig around and found the correct size adapter "1/8" BSP BSPP Female to Metric M10 M10 X 1"  it fits perfectly in place of the OEM sensor, the end of the temp probe sticks out just enough that it should get a consistent water flow temp but not interfere with the thermostat... it's not exactly in the most ideal spot (cold side of the radiator)... but it should do the job.

I also changed directions slightly with the headlamp... I found an circular model that has integrated turn signals on it, I didn't like the looks of the signals it had anywhere I'd tried it... I also have some bar end signals in the mail...   the bucket will give me a good place to put the wire harness plugs once I cut down and clean up the wire harness a bit... it also is about perfect for lock to lock spacing... once I reweld in a fork turn stop it'll be spot on for not hitting, but I did have to cut out the circle portion of the stock ignition cylinder holder on the top fork brace (forgot to get pic)

I then dug into swapping the clutch... such a crazy easy job... the clutch I got was a low mileage unit, it looked a lot cleaner and hopefully fixes my issue (If I set proper free play the clutch wouldn't completely release even fully against the bars... so I had to pre tension the cable a little to get a full release... not good haha.  while I was down there I pulled the tach drive gear... I'm debating on how to plug the hole... I was going to find a poroper bolt/plug but I have plenty of JB weld to fill the original bolt/nut thing so I may go that way... gota stay true to those GRM roots.

I'm mostly down to finishing some odds and ends and then working on putting things back together... wiring and rebuilding the forks (or at least replacing seals/fork oil) is the biggest job I've got left to go

BTW, I saw a GIVI smallish top case, like the one I used to have before it grew legs, for sale out in TX for sale. I know you went with a pelican type case, but I could prolly find that ad again, if you were interested.

I started looking at top cases for my K75S last night, and the HF ones don't come in the size I want, so I may have to spend the bucks on an actual Pelican. They have a lightweight line now: still pricey, but less than the BMW ones I find used, mostly!

The 75 could be bought new with a 22L case... I found a 35L in Atl. for 200... but I found 2 parts bikes for $800 ( both disassembled, a RT and a RS) so, i have to convince the financial manager we need to make a 600 mile road trip for our next vacation, with a trailer behind her Highlander!!!

ya if you find it LMK... id' rather removable luggage on this bike anyway...  I'm likely tossing the HF pelican case on the versys  anyway so I'd need another case anyway haha.

for the k75s... I assume your looking for something a bit larger... maybe taller that you can put a helmet into?

i'm working on my finacial manager on something similar as well... my son wants to ride but after the work i'm doing to the BMW i'd rather him not start on this... someone on GRM posted a few bikes including a lovely klr 250... naturally he has some triple triumphs... triumphs have a big place in my heart, the first bike I ever sat on as an adult was a speed triple that my sunday school teacher rode/owned (one of over 40 triumphs he's now owned)... as a tall guy I never expected to find something other than a cruiser that I could fit and cruisers have never been "my thing" I knew it was too much bike for me back then but the fact that there where bikes that I could fit on is what even opened my eyes to motorcycles...  kids will be out of town this week and wife and I are going to float the river with some friends for a few days so it'll be a perfect time to figure out the budget ;-)

also a small versys update...

installed some crash bars and luggage bars... amazingly made from t-rex racing... i've seen enough dropped bikes ruin the luggage that I spent the extra for the luggage bars... I'm looking at the best way/location to mount some highway pegs to the front cage/bars for longer rides another foot location would be very nice, the only problem there is the frame sliders on the bars limits how far forward I can comfortably go without hitting my shins or pushing my legs outward.  I'm also looking at aux/driving light options that I think would look good and work well... the stock headlight kinda sucks and LED bulbs aren't really the answer for this...

I also installed an aliexpress china knock of kaoko throttle lock; they won't ship to to the US so I had it shipped to a friend in Canada who forwarded it it to me... solid quality, very smooth.  The twist portion is a little larger than the Kaokos I've seen/used but that seems fine from the few times I've used it (don't use it it on the daily)

I also installed the cheesy china radiator guard *shrug* and the givi rear case rack supports... I haven't 100% decided what to do with that, i'm debating on a perminant bolted on trunk in the form of another HF pelican case or if I just build a platform to strap things to.

I'm also waiting on a clip on sheild for the knock off puig windscreen, the one I had before on the stock screen was too tall so I had to look though the windscreen.. and without it the buffetting was horrid.... with the heat of summer hitting I've just been riding without a screen.  I'm debating on cutting down a stock screen  and experimenting with that.

she's getting close to 2nd service time (first service was preformed before I got it)... so time to start figuring out what oil I want to use etc haha... she's been a champ rain or shin.

after these tidbits the final farkle bit for long distance riding will be the saddle... I liked the beads except how they cut into my front corner of my legs... I'd like to not spend $500 on a seat... so who knows what I'll end up with haha

That bike is looking SO good! The engine guards blend in quite well.

On the K, you got it right in one... don't really need the helmet to fit; at this job, I get to park at the door, so my ridin' gear goes in with me. But thats the same basic size where the lunch box and yeti cup go!     Pelican Air 1507 Case No Foam   is the one I'm thinking about.   $150 on Amazon .

My eye-talion friend is a very large guy as well, and has found very few bikes he really "fits" on. The HD cruiser look is big enough, but he has no intrest. He sat on my first K bike, back in 05, and was impressed that it didn't have a huge look, but was long enough to not feel cramped. At only 5'10'', and a 30" inseam, they are actually quite tall for my tastes; but such a smooth appliance, I love it. Since my old tired body will no longer tolerate the drag bike , or bobber look, I like my appliance bike blush

That size will fit a full face helmet (or lunch box cheeky) and made for the F650. But the shape would not be my favorite for the K. Looked good on the Funduro, though.

been working primarly on getting the electrical finished up/working

rewired the voltage reg/rectifier, also wired up the brake light wich also has the blinkers integrated into it.

I also installed an OS bar using some adapter/risers... I was trying some options for mounting the gauges... ended up just using the stock mounting option... I'm just removing the key and USB adapter for now... I found a good/clean place to mount the ignition.

I'll change to proper set of bar mounts at some point... also installed some renthal green grips... this one has all the wires crammed into the headlamp housing, I was able to pull a good bit of wiring down towards the frame and will shorten some of the others so everything will fit nicely in there with the headlight.

I'll chop the left key mount of the gauges, the right had to come off to fit the OEM vapor mount

last thing today I did was install the single carb option... it's from a quad that uses the same engine.... might cost me some top end but it'll be easier to tune than 2 carbs and it's also lets me route the wire harness more to my liking

fit was near perfect, I had to cut a little bit off the bottom nipple of the fuel drain because it hits a cross member...

I also had to order a. different throttle cable to deal with the weird cable connection... this is how much freeplay I have in the cable with the throttle tube side fully loose... I need to do a tube of some sort to keep the end of the cable housing seated.

and I cut up the top of the stock air box... I got the idea from another build on this board... this allows me to run the wire harness on the other side of the carb (not shown in the picture)... part of the reason for this is it keeps the stock battery mount in place which is nice and low, it also acts as a splash sheild for everything above it...

hopefully I'll have it running again soon, then I need to replace the fork seals and the brake pads (fork seals have leaked so much it covered the pads)

once it's riding and I'm comfortable it'll be time to bring my son to the parking lot and practice a bit more with it... he took the MSF class a few weeks back but in TX he has to do a drivers test at the DMV because he's under 18... he'll be getting a KLR250 when I can get up to get it thanks to someone on this board... but for now I'll let him ride this a little bit for practice and maybe the test if he seems ready for it.

he paid for the class with his own money and we bought him a helmet... this is mine for the 1st day of MSF class because he didn't want to barrow one... his came in the next day and he's asking for gear for his birthday and Christmas... I'm looking forward to getting out and riding with him at some point haha.

some fun updates...

I tossed the harbor freight pelican case onto the versys... mounted it to the $30 givi brackets... I need to get a lock for it still but it is fits the bike nicely... also I don't recall if I posted about the clip on windscreen spoiler... while the chinese knock of PUIG is a bit larger than my liking it really didn't help with the buffetting... but this little clip on makes it smooth sailing even at 75-80... I need to do a longer ride still to see how good it works on longer rides... but I'm impressed so far.

based on how much space the pelican case has I may well end up leaving the side bags at home most of the time... which means the crash bars for them will come off as well... maybe...

I'm getting very close to finishing her up... the electronics are nearly done... I need fix the ignition coil wiring, wire up the ignition switch from the DRZ 400, and wire up the front turn signals.  I also need to get the dash assembly wired up but I'm not doing that until I have the bike running.

today I got the skid plate installed... very nice piece but it does have a little interference with the brake pedal... I took a file to it to cut it down a bit (too late to pull out the grinder)... it helped... I'll finish it up with a grinder and a flap wheel soon, a dab of paint and no one will ever know haha.

on the carb front I got the cable adapter sorted... I took the adjustment barrel from the original choke cable and drilled it out so it's basically just a small inline tube... fits perfectly, a bit of heat shrink over it will keep it clean and dry haha... I'm also working on a carb intake trumpet/velocity stack that slips over the carb... ideally a friction fit (with the help of an O ring or something similar)... I'll make it so a filter fits over it... I'll be able to play with stack length and such... I have a lot of room to play with in the stock cut up air box and the setup also makes it very easy to get to the carb... I should be able to pull it out in about 5 min... should make swapping jets a little less cumbersome haha.

anyway only 2 pics... I'll be selling the HEED crash bars soon as they don't fit wth the bash plate.

and lastly...

because 2 bikes just aren't enough... I'll be picking up 3 more thanks to singleslammer here on the forum... I put a deposit on the bikes and hope to pick them up in a month or so.

first up is the 1986 Kawasaki KLR 250... this one is for my son... 28hp dual sport 250 with kick start only... it should be fun and I hope to be able to take it and the BMW out to some fire road trails for some fun and maybe some camping trips or something like that.

next up is the '04 triumph tiger 955i (gets referred to as "girlie" because of the eye lashes over the headlights... right now it's a non runner, sounds like electrical gremlins... I'm really looking forward to getting it fixed and spending some time on it... I've never ridden a triple but a 955 speed triple is at the root of my motorcycle orgins... it's also a nice upright riding type bike similar to the versys... it might also be a good option to fireroad riding as well... assuming I can handle that huge power...

and lastly an '01 Triumph ST 955i... it ran when disassembled... it is now in a bunch of boxes... there was thought to put the engine into a locost it seems... I've got a few thoughts on this guy... a street fighter is one of them... it has that 955i triumph triple so it could make a fun hoolagan bike... another thought is maybe a 3 wheeld car thing?... who knows...

this is a picture of a stock one...
