Just realized your looking for a commuter.

Send an email to info@bikeerie.org and ask them if anyone has a bike for sale under $200 and you'd like to use it to commute. You gain a lot of friends as well as find some good deals.

garbage night cruising then fix what you find?

i picked up a giant aluminum framed mountain bike with no seat and a broken derailer and fixed it for under $20 that way, and my mongoose bmx had a bent $10 sprocket and the rear wheel wasn't on straight.

yes, the cheapskate GRM spirit carries over to my bicycles

I'm surprised that the guys at the bike shop didn't even offer you some phone numbers to call. My commuter is an older Giant that belonged to the owner of the bike shop. He had ridden it to work that morning and aside from mismatched brake pads from a new product test it was ready to go.

I know the bike shops he's been to and they are not those kind of shops. In fact I know the one place in particular has a lead mechanic who really doesn't ride anymore.

ah those types of shops... I've always found the best shops are ones with guys who just love to ride and want everyone else to ride for the enjoyment of it... I would hang out and work at my LBS in Pensacola and saw him suggest CL frequently to people who would come in and gawk at the prices of entry level bikes, he'd even tell them to give them a call and he would look at the listing and give his opinion on it... and of course toss in the "then bring it in and I can look it over for ya"... his philosophy on it was that if he got them hooked on riding a year down the road they would likely buy a bike from him... in the mean time he's making money on service (although I'd frequently see him do little tweaks for free) and small odds and ends (which is where the real $$$ in a shop is made anyway)
