Ive been thinkin about a Cafe Racer for some time now and would really like to build one myself. Found this and was thinking - is this a good starting point?

what it could look like when completed...
If that's the one I think it is it's been up off and on for a while. You always run the risk of items missing when you buy one that torn down.
I have a 1974 CB360 that's still in one piece that I would sell you for around that price range. I found another bike that's road ready on ebay that I may buy which means the CB360 would probably need to go. PM me if you are interested in more details.

No. A good starting point is a complete, running bike that you can disassemble and modify. At the same price.
Keep posting, I love your avatar.
I agree; I made the same mistake buying a rolling chassis for $100 and paying I-don't-know-how-much ever since. Buy a roller; anything less than a grand (and that old) will mean replacing just about every wear item. The problem with these cheap starting prices is that they are chock full of might-as-wells.
ya, maybe you guys are right. good thing i have gotten rid of that "sudden impulse to buy" or "SITBs"...
The only difference between the before and after pictures is several thousand dollars and hundreds of hours of labor.
I was at a swap meet on Sunday and saw several bikes selling for $300-$400 that were complete and in generally good condition (one in particular was an early 80s 700cc Honda Nighthawk that was really quite nice.) Good deals are out there, you just have to keep looking.
ya, just keeping my eyes split on craigslist, ebay, here...
It's easier to remove things than put them on. Find a runner and Cafe it. Wicked easier.

Agreed.
Sure, it could look like that Benjie's Cafe Racer bike, if you're willing to pop for the tank and seat he hand makes.
Cheap Japanese runners are everywhere.
