My 81 Honda CB750 Custom has been giving me trouble this year. Rust in the gas tank, clogged carbs, spewing gas, sticky throttle... I just haven't felt the motivation to dive in and fix all this. I just haven't felt much motivation to ride at all - especially since I've been enjoying the Miata's ability to keep me dry when it rains, yet open up when it's nice out.

So Friday, my girlfriend told me about an 82 Suzuki GS1100L she saw on Craigslist for $350. The last $350 bike we got was her 86 Savage, whose engine is still in pieces on my friend's workbench. I was skeptical, but for the price I looked into it. It lost a battle with a moose in a past life, looks a little ugly, but has been functionally rebuilt with many new parts. I don't mind if a bike (or car) looks ugly, as long as it works right. So we checked it out. It was exactly as advertised. I figured I could bring home the GS for less money than far less hassle than it would take to get the Honda working right. So I did.

I've said before that even a 750 is more bike than I need. So now I've got an 1100. I'm not a fast rider. I save my speed and racing for the cars. But I definitely enjoyed the torque of the big motor on the way home. The thing rides smoother and more solidly than my CB750 ever has since I've had it. So once I finish stripping my accessories off the CB, it's up for sale - for a bit more than $350.

Can't beat the price. I was never crazy about the L model styling but the GS1100 is a great bike.

Just make sure to change the oil and filter on a regular basis and keep revs under 10500 rpm's it will go forever.

Asking $650. It's still got a stuck carb, and it's tough to sell a bike that's spewing gas.

The old CB:

...and the "new" old GS:

I already had the windshield and saddlebags for the CB, and swapped them to the Zook.

This is actually my 3rd GS. My very first bike was an '82 GS650L, kind of the little brother to this one.
