390cc 43hp 6,000$ without ABS. 2014 released in the united states.
Honda and Kawasaki you have both been put on notice. This is how you do a small bore street bike and price it to sell.
this is the race version without the headlights and mirrors but allegedly what it is going to look like in final form.
If its really like this on release it will kill my Aprilla lust.
I've been stuck on the idea of an early-'90s Ducati Supersport when I upgrade from my old Kawasaki EX500, but this is really compelling...
I would love a MH900e or 748 or a RS250 but this is modern and rideable and man does it look good.

This is what I wanted the CBR500 to be.
My mom is going to hate this sooooo much.

In reply to Appleseed:
I'm curious what this bike does for you that the CBR500R doesn't. I have no axe to grind here; they look really similar to me. Power is identical. Price looks identical. This looks like it would have a less comfortable ergonomic arrangement of bars vs. seat height but I could be wrong.

Not sure about Appleseed, but IIRC, this may weigh 100 lbs less than the CBR. I seem to recall the stats I saw yesterday made me think it was in the same territory as small dual sport bikes.

Okay, doing a little looking, the dry weight of the race version is 287 pounds, so probably an even 300ish when equipped with lights and related switchgear and wiring. I couldn't find a dry weight for the CBR500R, weight it comes in around 420 pounds. That's with 4.1 gallons of fuel and oil, etc. I would imagine there's about 80 to 90 pounds of weight delta between these bikes based on the above.
That's probably going to be very noticeable. One thing Honda isn't known for is making the lightest bike in most to all market categories, and this looks to be no exception.
In favor of the Honda, I saw that Honda is using a parallel twin, KTM a big single, to power these bikes. I would imagine the Honda will be a lot smoother to ride.
312lb's allegedly 286lb's in race trim.
The way I understood was that it was only styled like the moto3 bike but wasn't based off it or really share anything

Dunno, I think Honda's doing pretty well with the cbr500. It has twice the cylinders and 100 more cc, plus presumably more comfy ergos and better reliability for the same price.
Pretty bike though!
I was looking at the weight-power-price factor. The power and price are almost the same. If the power was based solely on displacement, (it isn't. but for argument's sake) the Honda should make about 56 horsepower.
As far as comfort, I ride a CM200T with clubman bars. Looks uncomfortable as hell, but I'm fine putting 200+ miles a day on it.
And I love Hondas.
I'm just excited there's now so many options in the smaller displacements. For a long time it was pretty bare if you didn't go for a 600 or 1000.
Of the 2 I'd probably pick the Honda, too, but I don't have much self control on two wheels, so I need to keep my power to weight ratio weak.

Pretty sexy. Despite the fact that my favorite color is orange, this is a cool looking bike.
The price seems good, if it's as light as expected, it should be quite fun.
Hopefully they'll offer a standard, unfaired version someday.

It's actually based off the Duke 390 which is a naked version already on sale over seas
That looks sweet. But the KTM 390 Duke weighs over 300 lbs dry. Adding a full faring with the required brackets will add another 20 lbs.
The CBR500 had over 10% more torque then the KTM 390 Duke.
Why can't KtM just put a de tuned version of their 450 off-road motor in there? That would be fun.
more herePardon me I seem to be drooling for some reason.
I'll stick with RD400 or RZ350LC, thanks.
