Sounds like the same drive I have. I owned a 97 CBR F3 and regret selling it. I put over 30K on it and it was dead reliable, Typically got 50+MPG (as high as 65, as low as 40). If you are using it strictly as a commuter, any bike can be good. I liked the CBR over the other sport bikes because it was the most comfortable and fairly upright. Basic costs were as follows...
Insurance for my 03 CBR 600RR is 500 a year. If you go with a non sportbike, it goes down considerably.
Tires are soft, but I typically got 10k+ on my front and 7k+ on my rear tire (no canyon runs, just the 405)
Gas is super, not regular so expect the added cost.
Keep the bike as small of an engine as possible (600 to 650) if planning on wanting mileage and the tight fit between cars on the 405 around the 10 (you did not mention where on the 405 you traveled)
My 03 600 RR is for sale now, but only gets 35mpg. I have had company cars so do not ride it nearly as much as I would like.
