After a few slides and wheelies in a parking lot, I think this thing is a Chicxulub asteroid level impact for the entire automotive industry.

For a few thousand dollars, you can get something which is absolutely silent, really light to throw around, and will easily get you to or from work on a few pennies worth of electricity. A company could easily have a bike shed with a solar panel on the roof to recharge every employee's bike. A city could reduce their entire bus network to a few wheelchair vans.

The only change I would make to the bike is to add a J1772 port for fast-charging. It is nearly perfect.

What isn't perfect is how our legislators treat them. They need to be encouraged. Registration should be a single fifty-dollar payment for the life of the vehicle, with sales tax waived, and an MSF course paid for by the government. Helmet, glove, and boot giveaways should be regular events in every town.  Imagine displacing fifty percent of the traffic for something that really is better for the environment and really does alleviate congestion.

My buddy races one in the provincial cross country series and loves it. I've been looking at them for a few years but I won't buy until the development slows down a bit

Had to google what this was...

I don't think a motorcycle of any propulsion system is going to impact the automotive landscape en masse.

I love e-bikes and anything that gets local traffic out of cars, also anything that helps us move more and being more in touch with outside. I don't love the crossover of high speed e-things on sidewalks and ped paths. I would love to see taxes on vehicles by size and weight, vs credits that encourage us to buy bigger and heavier!

What happens when states realize they could end highway expansions by getting enough people to switch to light-duty electric motorcycles?

The really nice thing about these is that it opens up a lot of potential places to ride off road silently.

Until people realize we're having fun and try to put a stop to it like they've done with dirt bikes.

Looks awesome, but a $6500 electric dirt bike is not going to be practical for 99.9% of commuters. I'd love it if it was, but motorcycle riding is just not in the cards for most Americans.

One good thing about Sur-ron: without pedals they don't faff about in the grey area of "is it an e-bike, or not?".

Instead they faff about it the grey area of "is it a street-legal motorcycle, or not?"

Not relevant except for 'off-road motorcycle' and faffing about (plus finding out), a local news story from Monday:

The Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) has been activated to investigate an officer-involved shooting.

On March 10, 2025 around 2 p.m., two Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies attempted to stop an off-road motorcycle for traffic violations in Fort Collins. The adult male rider refused to stop and drove onto the bike path in Edora Park. The deputies, who were on agency motorcycles, followed him into the park.

The suspect got off the motorcycle and exchanged gunfire with the deputies.

The suspect fell to the ground and did not comply with deputy commands. Due to the suspect’s proximity to his firearm, deputies formed a contact team and deployed a K9 to pull the suspect away from the gun. Responding law enforcement officers provided first aid until the suspect was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

One deputy sustained a gunshot injury; he was transported to an area hospital and is recovering. No other injuries have been reported.
