okay, this is almost identical to my "scooter thread". I need a good commuter bike. What do I get?

I found an awesome apartment that is only 2.5 miles from work. Flat roads, no potholes, easy-ish traffic.

I know almost nothing about bicycles...aside from how to ride them. I am thinking a vintage Peugeot 10 speed...

budget is less than 200 bucks. (I don't want a fixie)

They need to fix that. And by "they" I mean Tim Baxter.

My brother picked up a Cannondale that looks like a mountain bike, but was converted to a single-speed. Kinda like an updated beach cruiser. If I were you and had a flat commute, I would grab a classic beach cruiser from Wally World for under $200 or find one used.

Not sure where in GA you are, but heres some good examples ready to go:

These might need a little work-

it all depends on how tall you are if theyre gonna fit, and most will need a good tune up/tires & tubes etc to get to commuting dependability, but all these have some if not a lot of potential and a little wiggle room for budget. Also, especially with aging bikes, cash talks, so feel free to lowball a little and see what kinda deal you can come up with.

My tips:

  • I like steel bikes ...A LOT. Theyre more comfortable than aluminum since they absorb shock and vibration
  • its not hard to remove the front deraileur/chainrings if you want a more svelte bike for commuting
  • leave money in your budget for a rack and a decent mobile tool kit (multi tool, tubes/patches, pump/CO2 inflator etc) and some good shorts...you can forgo the jersey. but covered cycling shorts with pockets make a huge difference

Good luck
