Your latest bike is worth more than the last three trucks you bought combined...

I'm not sure if this means I have a problem with expensive bikes, or cheap trucks.

Eh, don't really care either.

BEHOLD, my latest hardtail!!!

My wife says I attract cheap trucks like dogs attract fleas...

When I was racing,  in the early and mid 80s, I drove a bug i paid $750 for and a custom frame with full campy super record that cost me 2k. So, I get it.

So I was able to catch some trails in between storm fronts on New Year's Eve. Long travel, slack headtube angle, and huge brakes are gonna require some reeducation in terms of bike handling. What a riot, though! This thing rips; definitely worth the price of admission!!!

My jeep was $500. The Corolla before that was $400. The Mazda before that was $400, so was the other Mazda. The other jeep was a trade for the Taurus, that was $100. The Chevy prism was technically -$600 because I bought it back from the guy I sold it to for $150 and I had sold it for $750.

My grail bmx? The one I can't even ride?

$3k all in.

I make good life choices!

Also that bike is sweet.

Me too!!!

Ram 50- $300

Power Wagon- $100

Sonoma- $1 (kid car, not even worth that)

Bike- I got it for $1300, but retail is $2700.

I've always been too tall to ride BMX, so I live the MTB life. I've owned some form of mountain-capable bike since the mid-90s.

Congrats on the new bike! I dont want to think about how much I paid for my last new one but so far its been worth every penny.

Got out for an actual trail ride on Saturday. Due to the wet weather, I had to wait a bit.

Anyways, I'm happy to report that this bike is a riot and a half. I still need to tweak the fit just a little, but it is pretty much dialed in.

Still getting used to 4-pot brakes and 200+mm rotors.

New bars and stem are installed.

Also, silver; because titanium!

I built up an On One 456  (same general idea- long low slack hardtail for a 4-6" fork) a few years ago, built it singlespeed for early season conditioning really, and I ended up riding that thing more than my trail bike that summer.  It was a giggle factory, and even though it was singlespeed, it was freaking FAST.  It got stolen off of my rack at my work, and never was able to track it down despite it's unicorniness...

maybe I should build another one...

Nice!  I need to get my hardtail running again...

I was involved in downhill racing for a number of years.  It was pretty common for the bikes to cost more than the cars transporting them.

While any one of my bikes doesn't quite cost as much as the combined money I've paid for the trucks I've owned over the years a few are more than I paid for any one of  them (although not when adjusted for inflation).

Amusingly, my latest mtn bike cost more than any one of the 3 Triumph cars I own - including my relatively rare 1980 TR8.  Although the latest book estimates has the current value of my GT6 at a fair bit more.

Nice bars (and bike)!

Who makes them? There's not a lot of high rise options. I'm riding a 2021 Norco Optic XL and needed to raise the front end and went with Deity 80mm rise bars. I had a really nice 31.8 mm stem I was running but the 31.8 Deity only come in 760 wide while the 35 version is 800 like I wanted.

In reply to adam525i :

Carver Early Riser bars. 830mm wide, 90mm rise, 15* sweep, 22.2 clamp diameter. (you'll need shims, or a BMX stem)

Titanium- so lightweight, but a bit flexy compared to a 35mm clamp alloy bar. They are supposed to be good for damping trail chatter.

Man I don't know how all of you ride such wide bars, haha.  Here in New England, 760s will rub on a lot of tree pinches and you need low speed English to get anything wider through.  830's I don't even know how I'd ride something like that hahahaa.

Nice.

I feel like this is similar to a trend I've seen that's essentially putting very inexpensive cars on very expensive name-brand wheels. I can't explain why, but I love it.

Yeah my last few bikes were 760s, 830 seems insane.  But I'm only 6'.

On a related note a month or two ago I was moving at a pretty good clip and caught a tree with the outer edge of my bars (and pinky finger).  It launched me off the bike pretty good.  Excruciating pain for a min or so until it settled down.  But in the end no real damage and it was a fun flight!
