My dad ended up with a tank full of unleaded in his 00 7.3. Filled up and drive about a mile when it began to smoke and bog. Turned the vehicle off and called for a tow.
Having it towed to a local shop to have the tank drained, hoping he didn't kill an injector (or 8).
Best case scenario, hoping to fill with fresh diesel and a bottle of fuel conditioner. Read people talking about running some ATF or vegetable oil for the next few tanks.
Planning on changing the filter for the next few fill-ups. Anything else?
I'd think you would want to change the filter before you try to start it, fill the filter with ATF so everything gets lubed up again ASAP.
The above was typed while waiting for the tow. It was driven a very short amount of time, but we caught it quickly.
Towed it to our friend's shop. He's dropping the tank tomorrow and blowing out all the lines. New filter is going in too. Said it should (hopefully) be no big deal.
Is there some truth for the ATF thing then? Should that be done for the next few tanks? Or should he just stick with running diesel kleen?
As I understand it (and diesel isn't really my thing), the lubricity issues with ULSD in older engines were solved long ago, though some like to run 2 stroke oil around 128:1 (1oz/gallon)
Gotcha, thanks for the tip.
Now just need to keep my fingers crossed that an injector isn't cooked. Those things are pricey.

Semi related, we had a co-worker who (supposedly) put diesel in his mom's Honda somehow. He wasn't very clear on how he 1) managed to fit the nozzle into the filler neck in the car and 2) managed to buy the totally separate gas nozzle labeled DIESEL and put it in.
I'm not entirely sure he didn't make it up, and also not entirely sure he didn't do it like a dumb ass. He also got fired after 3 months because he was an idiot at work, so...?
In reply to Jerry:
IIRC, at BP stations, the gas nozzles are green, and the diesel nozzle is black. Also, the nozzle was made smaller recently.

Now you understand my Sunday. Stupid idea they had there.
The diesel pump in a gas car, though. That's pretty impressive.
Someone where my dad works on 2 different occasions put gas in a duramax truck and drove it until it stopped running, both times it seemed fine after it was refilled with diesel.
Yeah, work has been crazy this past week. Had a local shop drain the tank. Filled with diesel, changed the filter, and ran some fuel conditioner. No issues.
Now I have 20+ gallons of contaminated unleaded to run in the lawnmower and to start bonfires with.
