Anyone here ever travel the Schofield Pass west to east? Can't find a real answer online. Some say it's deadly, others have done it in a stock truck. This sounds like a great trip, just need to know what to prepare for. Thank you for your input ahead of time.

Sorry, never run that one.

Do you mean the loop up from Crested Butte and back down thru Gothic on county roads? I did it in a stock GX470 and my offroad guidebook lists it as "easy". There are a couple of water crossings and some tight switchbacks but nothing too tough.

the trail to Marble listed the Devils punchbowl as the hard part. I think we're going to do the loop around Crested Butte and play it safe.

Loop around CB/Gothic is easy. Schofield is supposed to be nasty in the area called the Devil's Punchbowl, but I've never done it, so can't say from experience. Lots of great trails 100 miles further southwest in the Ouray - Silverton - Telluride - Lake City area, most of which are moderate and stunningly beautiful. Most of them can be done in a stock SUV/4wd pickup, especially if you have low range - the low gearing helps a lot. Unless you're really serious, avoid Poughkeepsie Gulch. I particularly like Corkscrew Gulch/Hurricane pass/California Gulch.

In reply to Jim Pettengill: We did the loop of gothic around CB. Didn't really need 4wd. Beautiful scenery.
