Today was a bad day. Went and looked at an 03 Mach 1 on Weds, 62K on the clock, test drove it around the block (no more than a mile but that was the dealership test drive route) ran great, lots of power. Car wasnt perfect, stone chips and what not but everything else checked out and it was priced right. Can tell it was a driver and not a show car but since thats what i was going to use it for anyways i dont care too much. So i bought it. Took delivery of it today after finalizing paperwork, reg, insurance. Of course theres the typical Friday afternoon Boston traffic, so its stop and go on the way home. Make it 5 miles from the dealership, 5 freakin miles, and the temp gauge goes red and the car dies. F%@ STUPID @$$ S&!^ F&#in CAR! Try to start it to limp it to the side of the road, but no luck, had to push. Long story short, im not happy, the dealer sends a tow truck, and because its the weekend i probably wont hear anything till monday.

Anyways, dont care why-thats the dealers problem now, but more curious if these things have a kill switch if they get too hot? I ask because when the tow truck finaly made it through the traffic an hour later the Mach fired right up. No smoke, no knocking, still has coolant and oil. So im wondering if the motors cooked now or if it saved itself and is still good. Havent decided if im going to keep the car or start the long battle with the dealer to get every cent back. I did get a 4 year 48K powertrain warrenty with the car.

For what i know, you should be OK. As long as you didn't drive forever with it pegged. My initial thinkings are t-stat, rad, or cooling fan. I would suspect the cooling fan/radiator if the car heated up normally then pegged the gauge. T-stat, if it went from cold to hot with no stopping in between.

Ford does do a failsafe no start deal when something goes way wrong, just like most every manufacturer out there.

The 4.6 4v is a fairly tough motor and should easily pull through without worry. Even if it doesn't, I'd fight to have the whole engine replaced.
