I found this local to me (nmna) and it has been marked down to nearly half price due to a small amount of cosmetic damage from a hail storm. I've spoken to the dealer and they received a storm settlement so they aggressively marked down the affected vehicles.
So does this generation eat transmissions like candy or was that problem solved by '07?
So it takes me to a Mazda 5.

You can share my confusion by looking at this website: http://www.mmurphyford.com/
Two different Mike Murphy Fords roughly 312 miles apart. Weird.

Okay. that worked.
The question still stands, by '07 is the 5R55W still considered a wear item akin to a timing belt? Plan to swap it out every 60,000-100,000 miles?

I'm one data point. I had an 07 Explorer V8 I traded in on a 2015 Explorer. I bought it with 18K miles on it and I want to say it had 140K at trade, but I'm not sure, maybe 150K. I towed with it. I never had any transmission issues at all. YMMV literally. But it was a good vehicle for us.

My understanding with just a small amount of research done is that the 02-04's were the most likely to have the transmission take a dump. Later ones don't seem as bad.
Here is where to go and ask though:
