New angle. My dads first new car was a 1955 Oldsmobile "88" Holiday Coupe.
Go
Which?
Pretty sure there were more than one Olds and Chevy from 55?
Not that I really care, I wouldn't pick either anyway.
My dad had a baby blue 55 Bel Aire 2 door post, 3 speed from a Corvette, 283 was bored to a 302 I believe, tri power setup first then dual quads. Took a road trip to some shop in Cali to have the upholstrey done including notching the bench seat to accomidate the shifter.
I will have to dig out the pictures of him racing it back in the day. Think there is one of him racing an e type jag owned by a buddy of his Mickey Taylor I think was his name.
Quite a bit more motor in the Olds, but the Chev would be lighter and easier to update. A nice Chev would be more expensive than a nice Olds, and also easier to sell. By 55 the Chev had lost the torque tube, and had tube shocks all around. Buick still ran torque tube and lever shocks in the rear, I'm not sure about the Olds.
Honestly, I'd take whichever one presented itself. However, the 56 Chev is a much, much better looking car than either 55.
And Grizz, in 1955 there was a Chev, a Pontiac, an Olds and a Buick. Cadillac might have had a long wheelbase car by then...

Are you currently running a fever?
I had a 55 Chev. with small block power and 4.10 gear. It was one of only 2 cars I wish I'd never sold. They are A LOT lighter than most realize.
For my choice? I'd take the Olds, but they're harder to find.
My Dad's first purchase. No idea on the full story, but he loved it.

I have this argument quite regularly with a very good friend. He has to take heavy doses of narcotic painkillers, so I forgive him. Do you have a legitimate excuse for yourpoor taste?

My dad had a '67 Cougar as well. In fact I was just going through his old stuff and found pics of the '55 Chev and the '67 Cougar, a couple valves, photos from a drag race in the desert, pics from a road course race in the late 60's (Camaros, Cougars, Mustangs etc) and an NHRA pit pass.
Someday I hope to recreate his old '55.

Yes. I've owned at least one of them. Have you?
In reply to Zomby Woof:
I still own a 56 and a parts car. Had a 57 210 when I was about 13- in those days an abandoned car could be towed home, phone the GRC and in 30 days it was yours.
55 is too truckish on the nose. Plus it was no challenge at all to figure out where the gas cap was.
This is my Dad's sunny-day driver:
Its kind of quick. Kind of fun.
I scare him every time I try to take a turn in it.
