2006 Mazda 3 hatch AT light?

My son called from college and said this light is on. Does anyone have any experience with this? Suggestions?

Automatic transmission light ? Maybe it overheated.

Neutral drops until it goes out?

Fluid change is most likely, near as i can tell. Mazda forum said solenoid stuck?

Anybody thought of checking the fluid ?

Fluid is good but ugly.

I've heard of automatic tranny transaxle sensors going bad on some Mazda boards.

This may be an issue also.

The filter and fluid are a pretty easy job. We have 121k on ours with the 5 speed auto without any sensor issues so I can't help with that. I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in ours but the Mazda fluid isn't much different in price.

Anyone know of any online manuals or recommend a book? Haynes,Clymer, etc...?

"Ugly", may be the key word

I have "rebuilt/repaired a lot of automatics with a filter and fluid change.

Is this light the MIL light ? If so codes can be read.

I've been looking for the FSM does anyone know where that is online?

My wife has a 08 Mazda 3 hatch, 5spd though, and we haven't (knock on wood) had any major issues. Her a/c currently isn't blowing cold but I'm hoping a recharge fixes it. She has 90K+ miles on hers.
