I heard that Ken Block was driving the Malibu and that's why it won.
They sure didn't build em like they do today!

The IIHS is a lobby group for insurers. No tax dollars involved. Nice to see they have succeeded in their goal of making people think they are a governmental agency though!
meh I would rather see a test like this:

The most amazing difference is how the interiors held up (or didn't).
I wonder how my 74 mini would hold up against either

I try to not think about that when I drive my Mini. I always try to drive it like a motorcycle and assume that nobody can see me.

Amen brother! When I first got it my wife, our baby and I went to show my mom. She liked it but said "what happens if you get into an accident in it?" I said "I'll never know about it."
She didn't like that response.
Did anyone notice the fuzzy dice that they hung on the mirror of the 59 Chevy?

I wonder if the 09 Malibu will run in 50 years?

I bet a Mini would be even worse then a Volkswagen Bus, and the saying with a Bus is that you are the crumple zone.
yea, I think the best thing you can do in a bus if you get into an accident.. pick your legs up as high as you can get them and hope you are hitting a car instead of an SUV.
I do remember broadsiding a brand new buick back in 1991 or 92 with my 75 fiat spider... I crumpled the hood, fender, broke the lights, and smashed the bumper back... the guy who pulled a u turn in front of me needed a new door, fender, and the hinge area of the buick rebuilt.

I always felt like I was the hood ornament mounted on the inside...

The difference from 1998 to 2015 is startling!
In reply to SVreX :
It is impressive. The difference in less than 20 years is amazing.
That Impala was a rusty pile. You can see the rust cloud after the impact. Plus it's an X frame. I rather ride a wet noodle in an accident.
Yeepers have a 1997 corolla. I love that thing but that makes me a little concerned
I would still rather drive the 59. I even send my 17 yo out in a 88 Samurai.
If I worried about all the things that could kill me, I'd never leave the house.

Armchair Safety Specialists here have long proclaimed that basically anything made since the early 90's is all sufficiently safe...So obviously, you have nothing to worry about.

It really wasn't, but there was decades of dirt and surface rust inside the body and fenders that got knocked loose in the collision. I agree that it was a lot more unsafe than the newer car, particularly because of the X frame.
I remember all the yelling and screaming on the classic car boards when the first test was done...I suspect there won't be nearly as much of that from the old Toyota fans about this test.
