So is this guy dead on? (I am not looking to purchase a car). Can you buy a Sandy car that has had "floor board" water only? A new Civic Si for $13,500 ($22,000 car) with a salvage title?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2012-Honda-Civic-Si-Sedan-4-Door-2-4L-/190768220605?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid=111000&algo=REC.CURRENT&ao=1&asc=14&meid=4066710722156003410&pid=100015&prg=1006&rk=1&sd=190768220605&&forcev4exp=true

This is a new vehicle and has never been owned or titled by and end user. It's ownership chain went from manufacturer to insurance company to dealer. The floorboards of this vehicle got wet from the flooding caused by Super Storm Sandy. The carpet was removed, cleaned, dried, and reinstalled. It looks new, smells new, runs and drives new.

The manufacturer will no longer warranty this vehicle, but for an additional amount you can buy a warranty. If you are interested in a warranty, please ask before you buy this vehicle. Ownership of this vehicle was transfered to me on a salvage certificate and will undergo a DMV inspection, after which I will receive a clear Virginia title to transfer to the buyer. The clear title will carry the brand "water damaged repaired," and will convey to the buyer the same rights of ownership as any non branded title.

I'm not sure I'd pay that much for a new 2012 Civic Si that's never seen a drop of water.

What about the "new" car of your dreams? Would you pay 62% of it's value to call it a flood car? Would you ever buy a hail damaged car?

For me, it's going to depend on the car, where the bulk of the electrical components are, and how much replacing everything that got wet with brand new parts would cost. Chances are, it's going to cost more than a new, undamaged car to get one fixed correctly.

No, no, and no.

Hail damaged, yes. Flood damaged, no. Not for 5 figures anyway. Aside from the mold/rot/rust issues, wiring would be my big concern, especially if salt water is involved. If we're talking $20k car for a $1k track only project...maybe. Still a gamble.

I didn't think about the computer stuff that might be under the seat.

Not just computer stuff, but there are always airbag related connectors under he seat that can cause all kinds of grief.

I had a 2004 WRX and the airbag light would go on anytime the passenger seat was moved fully foreward. The only way to get it to go out was to turn off the car, move the seat back and squeeze the connector. I couldn't imagine how much more aggravating it would have been if there had been water involved. The thing was, I was never sure if my airbags were automatically disabled because the had been activated.

I wouldn't. Almost all the water damage here was salt water and seeing what a couple days of it did to thick cables in the buildings here I can only imagine how much worse it can be in a car that was probably not cleaned as quickly.

I was searching for flood damaged car and came up with this auction offering flood cars for sale among others, I'm thinking about purchasing Sandy flood car. I wouldn't buy this Civic Si though, I think it is rather expensive for a car with water damage.

Yeah, if I was looking at a flood car, I'd want to see it IN the flood so I knew how deep it went in. Next would be where all the computers etc, were mounted.

(sort of like buying a repaired wreck. I'd want to see pictures before the repairs)

It's strange how so many of these cars are listed out west. Is it worth moving them that far?

Get a picture of the inside of the door, door card off, window up. If it's floor mats only the door will be pristine inside...

My friend sunk his avalanche off a boat ramp in a tragic drunken mishap, his friend was in the drivers seat and was wet to his waist. years later and 100k later it still runs and drives like a champ. But it was in the water a very short time. I dunno, honestly I feel like if it runs good then it runs good and it probably will for some time. I wouldn't buy it to keep it forever, and if you transfer title to certain other states you can probably remove the brand from the title (though carfax and etc will probably still show it).

Gotta store them somewhere. Not much storage in NY. State Farm has over 275,000 cars to store.

There are still a few piles of cars near my friend's house in Far Rockaway where the storm left them,

No. The cars aren't that great and adding all the potential for what could go wrong with the salt water damage, stay away, stay far away. Unless you plan on turning it into a track car, then yes, yes yes.

If it were a 2011 Si, I'd be tempted at ~$13k. But for a 2012, that's probably what a low-mileage used example is trading for now?
