On Long Island, we called it gym. Seems most people elsewhere knew it as P.E.
We call it gym here in New England as well.

Gym class in Jersey, at least it was 35 years ago. And it's "hoagie", dammit!

And PE is what the teachers/schedule called it, everyone else said gym.
